when it shuts off there is a short beep

  • Kayce Peters Feb 24, 2008

    I originally only had 256MB memory.I purchased
and added to my laptop a 512MB card. It ran fine until yesterday when I
removed the cards so I could get some dust out of the inside of my
computer. I didn't want to take the chance of static to my memory
cards. After I put everything back together, when I try to boot, it
only comes on for a few seconds, beeps once, and then turns itself off.

I tried what you suggested and still have the same problem. I tried to boot using only one memory card, with each card, and still the same.

Depending on your BIOS brand a single beep ussaully means A: a successful POST (Not likely since the machine does not contine to boot the OS)
Or B. a memory issue
The RAM itself is most likely the issue. You said you upgraded the memory... If you have the old RAM stick try putting that one back in and seeing if it boots. If it does you most likely damaged (very easy via static electricity) the RAM stick when you took it out.

If you added an additional RAM stick when you upgraded, remove that stick leaving the old one in and see if it boots.

Hi,
you have,nt seated the memory module back correctly.
push module in at an angle, usually about 45 degrees.
while pushing it back in, apply pressure, to push down towards the motherboard. ** check for any specs of Dust**
also check that you have,nt knocked the hard-drive ribbon cable in the process of cleaning.

When i power ON my dell mini it beep 8 time Please kindly hrlp

The POST beep code - 8 beeps indicates a memory problem.
Try reseating the RAM modules to ensure proper connection.
If it still does not boot up, the RAM may be faulty. Remove the RAM and take it to your computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. If faulty the RAM needs to be replaced.

I recently opened my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop to clean the fan, I put back everything and it started working just fine, but within 12 hrs it stopped working and though the power button is green, screen...

You most likely have a problem with your videocard(Graphics Card or GPU). The rainbows that you see are called artifacts and these generally mean that your graphics card is either overheating or broken.

Artifacts can also be caused by CPU problems but wouldn't let the laptop run for any significant ammount of time.

If your board is not supporting the 2gb memory module, it won't make any difference by upgrading the BIOS.

Acer Travelmate 270 Memory Upgrade

Acer TravelMate 270 upgrades:

The official upgrade slot is located on the bottom of the laptop and is easy to find. Just unscrew the small cover and there it is.

The other slot requires you to unscrew the two screen bracket screws. Once you have done this, between ESC and F1, F4 and F5 and F12 and PrtSc there are small plastic rings. Put a biro nib into these and pull down. They will pop down. You can now remove the plastic cover.
Unscrew the two screws marked "L9" on the bottom of the laptop which are located at the top of the memory cover. Now you can remove the keyboard. Underneath the keyboard is the second RAM slot. The SiS 650 chipset supports a max of 1GB per memory slot and since this laptop has two slots that means 2GB of RAM. I've used Kingston DDR400 PC 3200 SODIMMS.

You can also upgrade the CPU - the fastest CPU available is the Pentium-M 2.6GHz. Nothing faster will work - trust me on this. It must be a Pentium 4 Northwood architecture CPU with a 400MHz FSB. Standard P4 Northwood CPUs with the metal shim won't fit - unless you know a way of removing the shim without destroying the CPU. Best to stick with a Pentium mobile (Pentium 4 M) chip. Look on Ebay for these.

Of course the hard disk can also be upgraded - a 200GB 7200RPM 2.5" drive works a treat. Non SATA of course.

You can add wireless and USB 2.0 using PCMCIA carbus cards. I use a StarTech 54mbps wireless card with the RAlink chipset and a NEC USB 2.0 card with 4 USB ports. Both cards fit in at the same time.

The laptop absolutely flies with these upgrades.
