Installing a new hard drive

Hi ,
I just purchased a new WD 250 GB EIDE hard drive and installed it in my Dell Dimension 4550. My problem is it shows up as a 104 GB Hard drive. The computer shows it being installed as a 250 GB but when I check the properties of my hard drive it only shows up as 104 GB. Can anyone help me ?

    Hi,

    Sorry ...... I'm running Windows XP Pro service pack 2

    Well, I was running 2 hard drives on this system, a 120 GB and a 30 GB. I don't even remember how I had the jumpers set but it worked good for me. My 120 GB was my C drive and my 30 GB was my G drive. When I started my computer I was asked which hard drive I wanted to use and that worked well.

    I recently decided perhaps I could increase my speed, etc. by purchasing a new bigger hard drive so I purchased the Western Digital 250 GB. I was going to run the 250 GB as my master and the old 120 GB as my slave. None of the suggested jumper settings worked and it seemed no matter what I tried my computer wasn't recognizing (usually) EITHER hard drive. I used trial and error and nothing worked so I finally decided to just go with the single 250 GB. This works and it shows up in my system hardware as a 250 GB hard drive but when I go to ' my computer ' and check properties of my hard drive it shows up as a 104 GB hard drive (drive C).

    This setup works okay but I just can't understand why it just shows up as 104 GB. When I installed the operating system on the new hard drive it basically 'chose' the partition itself and made (I thought) to be a very large partition but it shows my partition and my hard drive space as 104 GB.

    Hi,

    Sorry I'm so late getting back to you. I did a clean reinstall of windows XP Pro and now my hard drive is working as it is supposed to and it shows now as being a 250 GB 'C' drive.

    Thanks for your assistance.

XP SP 2 supposedly has no limitations on hard drive size so if you selected it to use the maximum available space during setup it "should" have picked up the entire drive. The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you are running the latest BIOS on your system, so you may want to check into that if you haven't already. I hate to say this but you may have to rerun the XP setup from your CD and make absolutely sure that the maximum partition size is selected and that it matches the size you expect it should.

Good luck and let me know how it goes. I'll continue to research and will let you know if I find anything of any help.

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. You can use any ide hard drive that you want. Choosing a new hard drive depends highly on your requirements of use. If you're using it as a raid drive, then you need a drive with a high rpm rate. It all depends on what you're using the computer for.

But if you just want a new hard drive for general use, then any ide hard drive you want. A great website that sells affordable hard drive is www.directron.com

Make sure your hdd is showing as the master drive, save settings and exit bios. Re-boot pc with windows disc in cd drive and hit enter when prompted to boot from cd.
