Hi There!
You can certainly clean the mirror and lenses. surgical alcohol and a soft cloth should do the trick. Be careful when removing the screen. It is fragile and the slitest bump can damage it permanently. Also be careful not to turn or bump the lenses. Thus can result in many hours wasted on realignment. Good luck, JUS004

Need to clean the bulb to make picture clearer is this possible?

Because of age of use, dust covers the PRT lens (Red, Green and Blue) and Mirror as well. You can clean them with a soft cloth, with care. It is easier if you can remove the Screen (front side) but it is kind of complicated. The easier option in most of the Rear Projection TVs is to remove the lower cover and check if you have access to Lens and Mirror. Avoid excessive pressure in lens and specially with the mirror while cleaning is made. This process can make the picture clearer, specially if dust is excessive.

The picture seems to be getting less and less bright. can I clean the mirror on the inside of the cabinet or something

the mirror is usually not the problem----this set has 3 lens that if dirty will make the picture darker and somewhat dull. most of these sets you can unplug and remove the back cover and see the 3 black lens----clean them with a lens cloth or with a paper towel(spray on the towel first with glass cleaner)

How hard is it to open up a Hitachi 57: Rear

there are just a series of screws to remove the the back and the whole thing opens up. Not sure what to have you used to clean the bulbs off probably just a clean soft electronics cloth. No alchol or windex.

can you look into the blue lens when the set is playing using a hand held mirror and see if there is a picture in the blue CRT. If not you will need a new tube for the blue. If you do need a tube let me know as I have a source for good used tubes that are very reasonably priced.

How can I clean the mirrors on this tv?

to clean the mirrors you must remove the screen first there are several screws in the back to remove the screen. then there is a mirror shaped like a polligon clean this with a dry cloth do not use a paper towel. soft colth must be used on any optical surface. then clean the optical engine lens in the same manner. them the large mirror in the back. remeber if you leave a defect on any of these surfaces it will be amplified by the screen. this system relies on a lamp to provide bright picture so replace that as well. this should be a part of your anual cleaning agreement of the after market warranty you purchased assuming you bought one. dim picture = lamp, fuzzy, dim, dull picture = dust
