Cannon SD850 IS one month old. The lens will not close. When you turn on the camera it says lens error, restart camera

HELP!! I just purchased this camera for my son to take on his vacation. He used it once and now it reads "Lens error, restart camera".

How does one restart the camera?

I have the same problem. The lens on my camera will not close and I get the message "Lens error, restart camera" Any solutions? Or do I need to get it fixed professionally?
