Zalman VF2000 LED fan starts then stops right after boot

I just purchased the Zalman VF2000 VGA/CPU cooler hybrid, using it as a VGA cooler and just installed it. My issue is the LED fan will start for 2 seconds upon booting CPU, then turn off. I observed it and it kind of sputters every couple seconds thereafter, as if trying to start but can't. I've checked my connections, so I am at a loss.

It difficult to say your card might not have enough amps to power this fan. You cant exceed the ratings of the capacitors or they run out of juice,Or it could just do nothing. most items like this are quality controlled. The windings in a motor are in series and need the electricity to flow threw so half of them being out would mean all of them being out.Which would cause it to do nothing.Dont try cranking up the volts on the videocard if your motherboard allows it would cause failure to the caps after awhile and be a short lived fix.Try to find a card within 10% of the amp rating of the one that came stock.

Also the commet above is a better example of how relays work.

I say its a dud. The fan works by magnets inside. When the electromagnets get electricity it causes the polity of them to change making the fan move. Its possible half of them are dead outta the box. Send it back especially because the connections to a video card is simple considering its a plug.

ok well make sure you have the right ram look in the manual and see if it needs to be non error correcting or error correcting (non ecc or ecc) and if it needs to be registerd or unregisterd ram (AKA: bufferd and unbufferd Ram) dont run it very long with no CPU FAN or it will burn and check that fan by pluging it in someware els thats strange cpu fan is always running when mobo is on.

Zalman VF2000 LED fan starts then stops right after boot

Sounds like a defective fan, something having to do with the thermal probe, it causes the fan to speed up when cpu gets hot and to slow down when the cpu is cool. I suggest returning it for another one

How to get Zalman 9900 LED to run full speed all the time on socket 939 with three pin connector. Is there a setting I should use in BIOS

Get the free utility "Speedfan" at www.download.com it is a great utility for managing all the fans and temp setting inside your computer.

Cpu fan

There are usually more than one place to plug in a CPU fan. Only one of them is actually for the CPU fan, and monitored by the system BIOS. Make sure your fan is plugged into the right connector.

Cpu fan not running fast enough

This will depend on the motherboard you are using.

however, you need to make sure that the CPU fan lead is plugged into the correct plug on the motherboard... for example, I have an Intel 975xbx motherboard and it has 4 fan plugs, but only one of those is for the CPU. The others are for front/rear/top fans. If the CPU fan is plugged into one of the secondary ports, the CPU fan wont speed up correctly.

Also, some BIOS settings in the motherboard allow you to enable or disable automatic fan speed adjustment, and also set the temperature points.

I have an amd 6000 3.1 gig cpu being cooled by zalman cnps9500a led cooler on a gigabyte ga-m61pme-s2 motherboard and the cpu keeps on overheating when i play something as simple as world of warcraft,...

Try reapplying the thermal paste. Make sure it is a thin layer evenly spread across CPU. Also make sure you have good airflow through your case. And check your BIOS to make sure your fan will spin up faster to regulate temperature.

How to change

Hi

Replacing the heatsink fan on a PC is not a difficult job, but it pays to be thorough, especially with cleaning the top of the CPU die before replacing the fan.

Don't be mean with money when choosing a new cooler either. With CPU coolers you get what you pay for. I personally always use coolers from a company called Zalman.

Ok ..with that out of the way ..the basics are ...remove old cooler..

They are either held on by a sprung clip that fits across the cooler and locates in lugs on the cpu socket surround, or they are held by screws that go through the motherboard.

Clean the top face of the cpu die carefully making sure to use a blunt implement ..... scratches on the machined face will lead to premature failure due to overheating.

If the cooler you buy has a "thermal pad" stuck to the face of the heatsink, then remove this too and clean up the heatsink face. Use good quality thermal paste on the top face of the CPU die, then fit the new cooler. Getting the right amount of thermal paste is a bit of an art .... too much is a bad as too little. The paste is NOT a glue. The paste simply fills in any imperfections on the machined surfaces of the cpu die and the heatsink to aid heat transfer.

Does this sound complicated? It isn't really. The key is not to rush it and make sure the surfaces are completley clean and the thermal paste applied correctly.

Here is a link to one tutorial on fitting cpu coolers that you might find useful:
