This machine uses the Brother TZ tape, which is available in a variety of colors and three widths (1/4" (6mm), 3/8" (9mm) and 1/2" (12mm)). A TZ tape is supplied with this machine.

1 Press in on the rough area at the top end of the machine and fold open the back cover. Should be the exact process as loading batteries.

2 If a tape cassette is already installed, remove it by pulling it
straight up.

3 If the ink ribbon in the other tape cassette is loose, use your finger to wind the toothed wheel in the direction of the arrow on the cassette until there is no slack in the ribbon. Also, make sure that the end of the tape feeds under the tape guides. Note: If you are using a new tape cassette provided with a stopper, be sure to remove the stopper.

4 Insert the tape cassette firmly into the compartment, making sure that the entire back of the cassette contacts the bottom of the compartment. Note: When inserting a tape cassette, make sure that the inner ribbon does not catch on the corner of the metal guide.

5 Securely close the back cover, making sure that it snaps into place.

6 Feed the tape by holding down CODE and pressing PRINT once, and then push in the tape cutter lever to cut the tape.

The deck 2 side of my technics RS-TR979 casseste deck, keeps changing its playback direction every 3 to 5 secs, can i know how to sort this issue?

The direction is changed when the motor driving the tape spool senses resistance such as when the tape reaches the end!

If the tape you are testing it with is ok then it could be the motor needs cleaning or replacing!

My XHA1s records but won't play back any tapes unless you're in ff or rw. One of the tapes I had just loaded part of on my computer a few days ago with no issues. As far as I know no settings have been...

Sounds like the edge of the tape has been damaged. The edge of the tape has the speed encoded so the playback will know what speed to play the tape. Look at the edge of the tape for wrinkles. If present, throw away the tape so you won't use it for an important recording.

Pixelation and sound drop out

This case sounds like really dirty picture and sound heads in camera and tape kept sticking so exposure was on each part of tape too long.
Keep camera heads shiny and clean by buying camera tape cleaner.

VHS Tape

Possibly the tape is wound too tight and is not actually playing when in play mode.
Also, tapes can be accidentally erased. If it is placed on a speaker or other magnetized surface it will erase itsself. The magnet draws something out of it.
I'm not sure exactly how it works but I know it happens.
Don't give up just yet. Check with your local video rental store... maybe they know a trick that will help you.

Good Luck :)
