I have cable modem and it had been working fine. I did go into and erase the cookies and history and that is when I started having problems. All I want to do is go into connection manager and restore what I erased but do not know how to do that. I can connect to email by go ing thru AOL and then into yahoo. I have been working on this for a week and no progress. I know if I go to config sys I could probable solve it but I don't know the lingo. any help appreciated.

I did a system restore but not that far back only to Feb. 16. Charter comm. is my ISP but I also have Prodigy and AOL. Silly I guess to have all 3, I have windows xp. If I uninstall connection manager would that not just screw up everything? I do not have a disc to reinstall. Everything)programs) goes thru the yahoo actually thru Prodigy. I have had it for years and kept it because it was my business address. Don't really need it now, I guess....I did go thru administrator and services to check to see if anything had quit running and got all of that fixed. I do appreciate any advice on this maatter....thanks so much...........

Is your ISP providor AOL? Do you have ActiveSync installed (Ghost). Have you tried uninstalling your connection manager software and loggin in?
Erasing your cooking and history wouldn't stop your connection manager from running. There had to be something else that was deleted or uninstalled as well.
Are you running windows Xp and have you tried doing a System Restore to the point before the connection manager problem started?
Run System Restore to approximate 2 week prior to the problems you were having with Connection Manager!

Ok...even though Charter is your are connecting through Yahoo and Prodigy?
Connection manager is Microsoft's way to organize and
    automate network connections...
I take it you are using a pocket pc, thus the problems with connection manager.
    Types of Connections

Connection Manager offers two types of connections - The Internet and
Work. These are used for specific reasons depending on the features you
need in your connections. Here is a table of the functions and what option
    to choose:

    The Internet

    Internet Access

    Allows for direct internet access

Requires the user to check the option that
    the connection allows internet access.

    Proxy Server

Does not support a proxy server

    Supports a proxy server

    Socks or Winsock Support

Does not support Socks or Winsock

Supports Socks or Winsock for internet

    Virtual Private Network (VPN)

    Does not support a VPN

    Supports a VPN to
access the intranet, only when selected in the
    second list box.

    Network Synchronization with ActiveSync

    Does not support
    network synchronization

    Supports network synchronization
(Requires ActiveSync 3.x only. Except Windows Mobile 5.0

    Host Access

Names with periods in them (DNS style
    or FQDN) on the internet

Names without periods in them (WINS style)
    on the intranet
You can always add your own type of connection such as when you need to
    connect to different companies networks.

Applications that Support the Proxy Server Setting

The following applications support the proxy server setting in the
    Connection Manager:

    • Pocket Internet Explorer

    • MSN Messenger

The applications that does not use the proxy server settings in the
Connection Manager are Windows Media Player and Microsoft Money. So
make sure you configure it separately if you want to use Windows Media
Player or Microsoft Money through the proxy.

    VPN Support

The concept behind the VPN support is that whenever you need to connect
to a host without a period in it's name and you have enabled a VPN connection and you are not
connected directly to your network, the VPN connection
will automatically be started. This occurs when you access a network
share, Exchange Server, or a Proxy Server (IE: any host without a period
in the name). Also, if you leave the VPN settings blank, the system
will not attempt a VPN connection so you can use the Work settings for
    dialup or a home connection.

One critical note about VPN connections are that they are only opened
when a request to a host without a period is made and you are not on the
same subnet as the host. Further the VPN is closed when a request is
made to the internet. So the VPN connection does NOT support a split

I recommend that users consider just configuring all their connections
under Work. That way they can connect to the internet, use a proxy server
and access local resources without having to think about these
settings. To do this you need to check the box under Proxy Settings
that this "This Network Connects to the Internet". Make sure you
only check the option to use a proxy if you need it.

By configuring your connections this way, you can use a proxy at home
and still get connected to the internet as needed. Also, this will allow
you to use any connection you have defined under Work to connect to your
VPN as well. If you need access to two networks, then I suggest
adding an additional type of setting for the second network. This is done
by clicking on the drop down box under the option for Work and selecting
NEW. Then you can configure all the same settings for the connection as
    the default Work connection supports.
    Connection Scenarios that are Not

After reviewing the functionality of the Connection Manager, I have
identified the follow scenarios where Connection Manager will not provide
    you with seamless connectivity:

    1. Any company that uses a DNS internally will not be able to access
full DNS named hosts internally. This is due to the design that
requests for all names with periods to go to the internet (drop down
number one), not the Work connection (drop down number two) which is
where Work points to. I know that major corporations with internal DNS
based names will have this problem for example. There is no option to
connect to both hosts via the same connection. The user has to switch
between Work and The Internet in drop down box number one to get to
      those resources.

Except with Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. There is an option in
the Connection Manager to specify DNS named hosts that are internal.
      See above.

    2. Any user or ISP that uses a proxy and still connects directly to the
internet will not work. The proxy assumes all connections with a
dot in the name go to the proxy and that the proxy supports socks or
winsock to connect. So company's that use a proxy to speed up
access to the internet like when you use wireless will experience
issues with e-mail due to this issue. So with the connection to
Work, you can get to the web but no other
service. So if you set it to The Internet then you can get
      e-mail but no web.

The workaround to access e-mail is to use the IP address of the e-mail
server instead of the host name in configuring the mail connection.
Also, this will work for web servers as well for their default home
page. By using the IP address the system will always get to the host
    regardless of the connection.

    What's Missing?

Apparently, Microsoft did not plan for common issues that users will
experience when using connectivity. Microsoft really
needs to clarify why users need two different default connections - Work
and The Internet. Further the ability to configure the connections for all
possible options is very cumbersome. Microsoft needs to really work on
making this experience much easier for the user.

Have you upgraded to IE8 = internet explorer 8? When you comnnect to the internet watch your DSL modem and see if your modemis timing out when you try to connect. this means that the interent light will go out while you are trying to connect to yahoo. Other than that I don't know why it is doing it without being where you are to see it. There are a few othe things to try. Clear out your cookie folder and run your virus checker to see if it is a virus problem and last but it seems like you lost your yahoo drivers or cookies and that's why you are not getting a connection to Yahoo. Is yahoo your main connection page? if so it might be that your home page got hijacked and running a virus checker/spam checker should find it.

Ethenet not reconized

Hi, If your son' s computer has a LAN port, then install the LAN driver. LAN port is different from modem. Modem is used for dial-up connection while LAN uses broadband or dsl connection. If you do not know where or how to find the LAN driver, post the manufacturer and model name of your LAN or the motherboard. You can also find it by right clicking the My Computer icon->Manage->Device Manager. On the right side, Expand the Network Adapter. You will then find the software that you are going to reinstall. Another thing is to try to update the driver if it works or not. Here are the steps :
  1. Right click My Computer icon.
  2. Click Manage
  3. A box will appear (Computer Management), Click Device Manager
  4. On the right side, Click and expand Network Adapters
  5. Right click the software, click update driver.
  6. Wait 'til it finds the necessary software.
  7. If it does, then your finished installing the Network Adapter driver. If it says it cannot find the necessary software, you have to manually install it.
  8. IF NOT yet installed, copy the Network Adapter software and paste it in google to find your Network Adapter installer.
I hope this fix your problem. Drop me a comment again if you encounter some problems, ok? I will assist you.

Yahoo Browser connects to internet, but Explorer&AVG update wont

Yahoo Connects but IE and AVG wont
1. Try opening AVG and adjusting the connection settings.
2. Go to Start/ Network connections/ Local area connection/ General tab/ Scroll down to TCP/IP/ highlight it and click properties. Make sure "obtain IP address automatically" is checked. Under the advanced setting there, DHCP should be enabled.
3. Verify setting in Internet Explorer under: Tools/Options/ Connections/ Lan Settings/ select "automatically detect settings"

You might also check your AVG program for a firewall conflict or block there.

Let me know if this helps

My HP wireless doesn't work? I don't have wireless connection on my compaq laptop anymore.

check your wireless adapter is on... the switch is on the front of your laptop and you should show a blue light when it's on, also go into device manager and see network adapters.. you should have 2 (the wire one built-in and your wireless network adapter.. if you only have one network adapter, check the front and see if the light indicating the status of your wireless network adapter is amber.. (if it's showing amber and you're sure it's in the on position you may have a motherboard problem and you may need to send the system back (I just had one of those with a compaq computer and since the item was within warranty the fixed in a week)

if your wireless adapter light is blue and you see your wireless adapter in device manager follow this instructions and you should be ok,
