Are you sure it's really turning off? My camera goes into a "sleep" or power down mode....a slight pressure on the shutter button wakes it up and it's ready to shoot.
I will need more info on the settings you are using. It might be that the camera is in a specific mode which is not allowing you to take continuos shots.
