Question about Intel Desktop Board SE440BX-2 Motherboard

1 Answer

Processor up grade

Hi, I have an older computer that I would like to upgrade the processor. My question is what is the fastest processor that can be installed on my motherboard? I have a Intel SE440BX-2 motherboard. AA724531-204.Right now it has a P2 with 350mhz. I would like to go with the fastest processor possible. Would I notice much difference going from a P2 350 to a P3 600 or what ever is the fastest processor it will accept? What all do I have to do to change the processor? Thanks for any help you can give.

It uses a Socket 478 for an Intel Pentium 4 processor up to 400MHz. You are somewhat limited being this a older (in computer yrs) model. This is the fastest and for some reason the cheapest I could find.

Socket A/462 can take any AMD K7 family processor. The fastest you could get would be the Athlon XP 3200 I believe, but that could also include the Athlon 1400 and the Duron 1800. So it looks like you can make a significant upgrade of yhe processor.

Processor upgrade

Here is a link to the manual for the motherboard.
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock423/850/
p4t-m/p4tm-100.pdf

The manual doesn't really say what cpu speeds the board supports.
1.4 ghz was about the fastest processor speed when the board came out. My guess is that a 2.0 ghz cpu may not work.
It would be a slight improvement over the 1.4 ghz cpu, but not a huge difference.

Fastest CPU available for the K7N2G?

Look for socket A processors and ignore the XXXX+ and focus on the XXXXMHz rating (the MoBo's manufacturer's support site will give you the max processor your Board will handle). Since you mention that your MoBo is 4 to 5 years old, you'll probably better serve yourself to replace the MoBo and processor (you'll be able to upgrade to a much better/faster processor by upgrading both, and shouldn't cost that much more), and probably be happier with the result. You may want/need to upgrade your Power supply while you are at it too.

Fastest socket A processor?

i think you will find that you are in fact using the fastest speed processor for the socket 'A' type of motherboard as AMD has changed to socket 754 or 939 for dual core processors. You can clock the speed a little in the bios, if you go to the peocessor section in the bios and look at the clock speed probably set at 133MHZ you can move it up 1 increment at a time, eg 134MHZ and keep trying until the pc wont boot up, at which point you will have to reset the cmos settings JBAT1 terminal and then set it again to the fastest you got it to before it wouldnt boot.
