Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Philips CDD4851 CD R/RW in my HP Pavillion XT963

When I insert a cd with info. I need to transfer to the computer it will not start.
If I want to make a cd with saved pictures, it will instruct me to;

INSERT A WRITABLE DISC TO CONTINUE

There is no disc in the drive
Please insert a writable CD into the drive D:\.

Even when there is a NEW disc already in it.
How can I fix this error?????? Thanks, Leo

    Mike,
The disc is NOT being recognized and therefore will not run.

    Mike,
I followed your instructions and un-installed and re-installed the cd r/rw.
Didn't seem to make any difference. Still same problem.
I put in a cd, known to have pictures and the little disc (next to the cursor) flashed a few times but never heard it hummmm as it should and nothing ever came up.
I have a cd-rom cleaner disc, but it won't play either.
Being a mechanic, I'm about ready to take it apart and investigate. It may never run again. Ha! Leo

    Hi Mike,
Found problem with door and disc bed not operating. Looks like some mechanic broke part of the plastic operating rod that activates the thing. Anyway, I have glued it back together and now have to wait 24 hours for the glue to dry.
Maybe will get to try it out tomorrow.

I noticed on the reviews of some of the CD/DVD Rom Drives that Tiger Direct sells. It is quite common for my problem with some of the new drives.
Would you have any preferred brands or do I have to install another Philips? Thanks, Leo

Hi,
if the device is being recognised, As D:- Or E:- et,c.
right click on the device, and select options from there.
such as open/explore et,c.
If the disk has been written to in any way shape or form, even the smallest file. then the disk being read will be classed as empty.
try a different CD Disk, And try re-installing your CD writing software.
Hope this helps mike @ Compurepair.

    Hi,

    ok heres your solution.

    1) go to My Computer.

    2) click on Control Panel.

    3) System.

    4) Click on Hardware then Device Manager.

    5) Then CD/DVD Rom Drives.

Then if you see your drive there, right click/properties and it will give your drive info ( in the centre Pane ) should read the drive is functioning properly Or similar Or the drive has problems.

This will also give you options to Troubleshoot the drive.

    6) from here you can also uninstall the drive. ( don,t worry you can do this ) if you uninstall. then click at the top scan for hardware changes, your drive will re-appear as found.

    7) re-boot the computer, and see if this has worked.

Finally if non of this works, and your drive does not recognise any cd or dvds. ( trying music CD-original DVD et,c ) then your laser-read head is suspect ) You can try a laser-head cleaning disk. or unfortunately drive replacement will be necessary.

if you continue having problems, don,t hesitate to contact me.

    good-luck Mike @ Compurepair.

    Hey leo,

    thanks for the rating buddy.

    Appreciated.

    If you take it apart.

Heres how you,ll do it. there should be 4 screws, usually underside or side. the top or bottom panel will lift off.

Once you,ve got to the laser-hesd. put a small amount of lighter fluid or meths ( anything that will evaporate ) onto a cotton bud ( swab ) gently wipe the bud over the laser eye.

also you,ll see 2 metal rails, this is what the laser-head slides up and down on. give them a wipe, and put a smear of vaseline on.

put the drive back together and hopefully Presto. you,ll be up n running again.

option 2 is to boot up the computer drive connected without lid, and seee if the laser head moves up and down, or a light is coming out of the laser itself. look from an angle not directly into it. it won,t burn you but you can get a bit of a dazzle.

    good-luck buddy. Go-For-It.

    Mike @ compurepair.

I have a hp pavillion laptop with the philips dvd-ram sdvd8821

Just try to reinstall the DVD driver software through the Add Hardware wizard at the control panel. From the Start menu, left click the Control Panel, and the Add Hardware. Right to left click to open. Just follow the instructions and let your PC do the rest. If you have an internet, connect your PC without opening any window. Your PC will autoconnect and search the internet for the proper software driver. Wait for
a few minutes, until it is installed. Hope this Help.

HP Pavillion laptop won't backup to optical drive...CD/DVD-RW; I do have 1 Click Copy (&Pro) installed as well as DVD43. I have tried to uninstall the DVD43 & 1 Click but it doesn't change...

HP Pavillion laptops and every others laptops do require CD/DVD recordable for backup not CD/DVD rewritable. Try to use a CD/DVD recordable to see what will happen first.

Cd burner wont burn whole cd. It burns 6 out of 18 songs and wont work in cd players. hp pavillion laptop dv2000

Some Cds (or individual songs) are Copyrighted, so they will not burn to new CD.
Make sure you're using CD. W. and not CD. R.W. as the latter will only play in your computer CD player. Where as the former will play in your car or home player.
