What do I need to do in order to hook my EEE PC 900hd netbook up to my tv? Is there a certain type of 15 pin VGA cable I need, and do I need to change any settings in order to get the video to display through the cable and onto my tv once they're connected? Thank you for your help.
Hi
You will need a male to male, 15 pin D-SUB VGA cable to connect the webbook to the TV. You also have to make sure that your television supports such a connection. If not and it has side AV then you can get a male to RCA VGA cable.
Then you will need an audio cable as VGA does not carry a an audio signal. You will need a male to male mini stereo jack.
Connect the VGA cable to your computer and then to the TV. Then plug the audio jack into the headphones socket of the webbook and to the PC IN or audio in on the TV.
Turn the webbook on and if you have to use the Fn key and one of the F keys to switch screens (it usually does it automatically but the keys are usually between F4 and F7)
Regards.
Right, well, IF your TV has a DB15 Female Plug on it then you CAN, connect it up and it will work, as a second "Monitor". OR If the laptop, has a "Composite Video" a Yellow RCA socket, then you can, connect to the TV's Composite IN. & it will be a second monitor. Otherwise you cannot, the VGA signal is NOT compatible with a TV's input. SOME cards have a connector that plugs into the DB15 and to the TV, but they are "Special". In saying that though you can "Micky Mouse" things together and get an output, but it real poor quality and disappointing.. results, there are posts on the net about doing this if you wish.

It's probably a hardware failiure, but it could also be a loose connection, if it's loose, you need to open up the laptop, which I would suggest being very careful on. If you have a warranty, get support and such. There's a virtual keyboard on control panel's accessibility options in Windows XP. I'm not sure about Vista.

More information would be helpful - what operating system are you
running - XP or Linux? are you getting no signal at all? or just a
picture and no sound? or vice versa?. What settings did you try?
In the meantime, I have just been doing the same thing with a different TV and I did get it to work, although my display is too fuzzy - I suspect the TV I'm using doesn't have a high enough resolution - sadness. So here's the 411:
(A) Hardware - check your hookups are correct first - the tv should be
off when you do
this - netbook can be on I think, although you might want to have it
shut in standby - anyway (1) you need to plug the VGA cable into the
port on the 1000HE and the other end gets plugged into the VGA IN port
on the TV; (2) if you are using external speakers directly on the
netbook, you do not need to connect an audio cable - otherwise you need
an audio cable (standard PC to TV, about $12-$15 at Best Buy or Radio
Shack) -
plug one end into the headphone jack on the 1000HE and the other end
into the AUDIO IN jack on the TV located right next to the VGA IN port.
Now you can put the TV on.
(B) TV settings - Now you need to switch the TV input to VGA mode, which
is the correct setting for for a VGA hookup (just like you pick cable
for cable, TV for TV, etc.) You may have a separate button on your
remote control for this called "input" or "mode" or similar, or it may
be accessed from the menu button or something else entirely - check your
TV''s manual.
(C) PC settings - Once you have the TV set to receive VGA, you then need
to configure the netbook. I have no idea how to do this for Linux, but
in XP open "Control Panel", open "Display", click on the "Settings"
tab, click on the "Advanced" button, click on the "Montior" tab and
verify that the box next to "hide modes that this monitor cannot
display" is NOT checked - if it is then uncheck it. You have to do this
or you will not be able to set the TV to a resolution beyond what the
netbook can display (fyi, the netbook lcd is limited to 1026x768 and
should NOT be set higher). Now click on the tab "Intel(R) Graphics
Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile". I recommend you put a checkmark
in the box for "Show Tray Icon" so that you can quickly access this menu
in the future when switching display settings between your netbook and
TV. Now click on the "Graphics Properties" button. This will open the
menu that allows you to configure an external display - you will notice
that "Notebook" is selected at this point. To output to your TV only,
select "Monitor" and then "Display Settings" to choose the resolution
you want to output to - your TV's manual should have information on
highest resolution settings. With some TVs you can just start at the
highest resolution and work down until you get one that works - if you
will just get an "unsupported" message and XP will automatically revert
back to the prior setting after 15 to 30 seconds - just be careful as I
have heard that some TVs can be damaged if you try and set them on too
high a resolution.
If you are still having trouble with video, check that Windows XP is
using the correct driver for your TV - first check if your TV has a
Windows XP driver at the TV manufacturer's website. If not, just use
the XP plug n' play driver.
Oh, you might want to enable Cleartype in Windows XP - Microsoft has an online utility here and a link to a utility you can download:

An even better cleartype utility is here (has good rep. and is posted on CNET and Softpedia as being clean):

Well, that's all the info I have - hope it works for you.
