How to fix a Refrigerator that Doesn?t Cool or Runs Constantly

If the refrigerator’s light works and you can hear the refrigerator running but it cools poorly or does not stop running, make sure nothing is blocking the passageway between the freezer and the refrigerator compartments. If airflow is restricted by, for example, a loaf of bread situated in front of the passageway, the refrigerator won’t get cold. Be aware that a refrigerator will tend to run longer when it’s full of food, the door is opened frequently, or the room temperature is hot.If your refrigerator runs without stopping, it may be low on refrigerant and cannot reach the low temperature that the cold control dial summons. More likely, it is a defrost problem in which a component in the automatic defrosting system is faulty. This could be a defrost heater, a defrost timer, or a defrost terminator.
Before you call a repairperson, do the following:
1) Determine whether the refrigerator section is being cooled. If you see frost at the top of a “frost-free” refrigerator even when the cold control is set low, it means the refrigerator probably has a full charge of refrigerant and it is the thermostat that is faulty or out of calibration.
2) Try turning the cold control both up and down. If the compressor doesn’t shut off, the cold control may be broken. Call a repairperson. During the repair, it is a good idea to have the defrost timer and heaters checked to ensure they are working correctly.
3) Look at the condenser coils, located at the bottom of the refrigerator (behind the kick plate) or, in some cases, at the back. These coils disperse heat from inside the refrigerator out into the room with the aid of a fan. If the coils are dirty, the refrigerator won’t operate efficiently. You must clean them regularly.
4) Make sure the drain line under the evaporator coils, which goes to a pan underneath, is not plugged up (water should drip into the pan when the refrigerator is defrosting).
5) To put off having the refrigerator repaired for a few days, you may be able to defrost it manually with a hair dryer—if you can access the cooling coils in the freezer section. Excessive moisture in the coils can turn into a frozen mass, reducing efficiency. Be very careful when using the hair dryer near a water source as there is a serious risk of electrical shock. Also be careful not to melt the plastic parts.

Kelvinator fridge freezer

  • If your refrigerator leaks water, you have a problem with either a water line or a drain line. If your refrigerator has an automatic icemaker or a water dispenser, the water supply line could be broken. Automatic icemakers have a drain line that runs down to the drain pan beneath the fridge. Mold build-up inside the drain line can lead to a rupture that allows water to escape .A broken drain line can also lead to water leaking from your refrigerator.

Drain clogged

Water is supposed to drain down a small drain line to a pan down near the compressor where warm air from the condenser fan will blow warm air over the water and evaporate the water again an put it back into the air inside your home, office or wherever your refrigerator is located. Over time that little drain tube gets slime, algae and a gooey white paste gunk that fills the drain line sides up stopping the waterflow downward to the condensate pan below refrigerator. If blocked by gunk or ice you will see trails of liquid leaking down the rear wall of fresh food compartment until it reaches the crisper drawers. Gunk is an accumulation of algae slime and just crud that appears from nowhere in a refrigerators defrost condensate drain line. How a refrigerator leaks is not always the same with every model as you may see frozen ice flowing down the rear wall of freezers on side by sides. Here is an example of a ET18PKXGTO Whirlpool refrigerator leaking water into a cup below the freezer compartment. Click here=> Whirlpool Leak Photo taken by TechnicianBrian. TechnicianBrian.com. And in this photo are several parts listed in photo group #1 were it is most likely running down the wall=> MagicChef CTB1921AR fresh food section. If you still have questions please ask and rate me if I was able to explain this well enough. Every refrigerator is made different so these are examples only. The key is to find if ice or just gunk has blocked you defrost drain. Unplug and then remove the rear panel in back of freezer. We need to see if the water is overflowing the condensate drain tray or if the blockage is in the turn the drain leads down back of your refrigerator. Much more on this page=> Leaking Refrigerators! The drain is behind the panel inside the back of the freezer. It is under the coil. You may need to run hot water through the drain line to defrost it before you can blow it out. Good luck

Water leaking from bottom of side by side refrigerator

The is a fairly easy way if you have a strong stomach.

On the back of the refrigerator, you will see a plastic drain line running to a pan underneath the box. This is the drain line for the evaporator condensate water. It is stopped up in the refrigerator section of the box.
Here is the tough part...Pull the hose out of the back until you can wipe it off with a clean towel and blow hard through the hose with your mouth.
By the way ...take your food out of the fridge...you will blow some pretty disgusting stuff out of the drain and into your desert if you don't. This will cure your leak.
Pssst...you can used compressed air if you are a wuss! lol
Good luck
