Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

The fridge part of my fridge freezer keeps freezing up on the back wall; even though the knob has been turned right down. Food in the veg trays are freezing up. The motor has now started being very noisy. i assumed it was the thermostat so have bought a new one - however I cant find where the thermostat is located and don't know how to replace it when I do find it. The model is Ariston AS108 and is 10 years old.

    Hi

Thanks for your reply. What is an Ohm meter; and is it something any electrician might have?

  • hockney Feb 13, 2010

The icing up on the back wall of the fridge is outside the realms of normality - it is thick ice and didnt happen until recently; the veg in the veg box freeze solid; and ice cream in the freezer part is much harder than it should be

    Thanks

I have never even seen an Ariston ice box. If that is one that has seperate compressors for fresh and freezer compartments then you must have a bad sensor. Never assume you need a control board until you have replaced those. If the unit has a single compressor then I would imagine you have a bad control damper. These dampers open and close according to fresh food compartment temperature. Yours is most likely stuck in the open position.

DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Yes, an electrician will have an ohm meter and they can be bought at auto parts stores, lowes etc. for around 10 dollars for the least expensive ones.

If it is an electronic thermostat it could be that the engineer has changed the board but not the sensor which reads the temp. If it is a mechanical thermostat it may be hes fitted the wrong type.It could also be that the system is short of refrigerant and the actual refrigerant charge is not getting all the way to the thermoststs sensor to switch it off, the back wall of the fridge should be frosted at least 3/4 of the way down and not just forming in a small part of the fridge.

Hi, this problem is going to be with the running thermostat. (cold Control). It has gone bad and stays open which in turn will keep the compressor running continually and will cause the fridge to get colder and freeze food. It can normally be located in the control panel inside the fridge (it is the control that has wires, the other is the damper). Locate the thermostat and replace it. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again. Good Luck!! Mike

This is a drawback of most mini-fridges. Start by defrosting everything. Then fill ice cube trays with water and keep lowering the setting until the water freezes. Just go a little lower, no more. Fridge should not freeze food. If the fridge stays closed all the time food will freeze. Also if the freezer element gets ice buildup it must be defrosted. Not automatic like home fridge. Most kids today weren't born when the last fridges that had to be defrosted were in service.

That model has a electric powered damper that opens or shuts to reduce or increase the flow of cold air from freezer. Sometimes they stick open and will not close. It's quite expensive to replace. And the temperature control board is also expensive. I believe it's time to talk to the Landlord and get them on the project. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Freezer not freezing properly, ice on back wall

Ice on the back wall indicates a problem with the defrost cycle. The ice builds up and starts to choke off the air flow, so your symptoms would indicate that may be happening.

Defrost problems are usually any of the three components, the heater element, the defrost termination temp switch, or the defrost timer.
