Question about Bosch 1600H-NG Natural Gas AquaStar AquaStar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater...

1 Answer

Our unit is housed outside of the house inside of a metal water heater housing that is sealed (vented to the roof ) Whenever we have a hard driving rain -the heater burners will not turn on. It seems that somehow water is getting in to the burners from the venting system. Is there a way to prevent this ?

The flue should NEVER go straight up. Go up one foot, put a 90 then another 1-2 feet into a tee with condensate (rain) removal then go straight up. Make sure there is enough combustion air. Instructions are in the manual.

Installation instructions for house

if this is what the problem thing says it is then this type of water heater requires a special instaliation ,the room its in must be ventilated with permant vents through to a outside wall ,then a special valve in the flue pipe to prevent blowback down the chimmney also another valve in the flue to shut off heater in case of a partial blockage liuke a birds nest .If you are not sure of exactly what to do and the security and safety measures that go with this type of heater then get a plumber in unless your mounting it outside in a roofed over space with no sides like a porch .

I currently have a tank type natural gas water heater. My home is near Portland, Oregon, and was built in 1987. to change to a tankless gas water heater, can I use my existing gas vent pipe or will I have...

Depends on what type of vent pipe it is. Usually a house of that age, a better vent pipe is needed. Also, tankless water heaters need a more direct path to exit exhaust then the tank water heaters. Chances are you will need to either just replace the type of pipe to one that can withstand higher heat and/or relocate the pipe exit to a more direct route outside the house.

Hot water heater not venting properly.

Hi .. it appears that your house is very tight. From your description of leaving a window open , it seems that the gas heater is suffering from lack of make - up air. Forcing the gas exhaust up the chimney will not really resolve this. You will still be trying to move air out without any air input to replace it. You may be able to install a spring loaded vent so there will be an air exchange. Something like a dryer or bath vent hood installed backwards .. this might work. There does not need to be much of a make-up air supply .. something like a 1 inch hole might be enough. I have seen this problem in a neighbors house , he weather proofed his house so good, that his fireplace would not light, no draft !

Any thoughts, concerns?

My water heater keeps going off whenever the heat to the house is on.

check to see if the gas line coming into the house is big enough to support the water heater and the furnace at the same time. Call the gas co. and have them check their regulator for size and performance

After use, while its refilling, my Rheem hot water heater makes a banging sound inside. Anyone have this issue?

I suspect the noise is being caused by expanding metal groaning or 'popping' due to the expansion. We have a metal roof on our home and heating and cooling are always accompanied by similar noises that are inaudible inside the house but catches our attention if we are on the porch.

Furnace filter is black and sooty wall seem to be sooty

By sealed unit you mean that the burner air comes from outside of the house?      You have checked the heat exchanger for cracks by removing the burners and looking with a mirror and flashlight, correct, or had a service tech so?
The furnace burners have enough air and are burning clean (blue) with just a tip of orange at the end? You bought the house new and the fireplace has never been used?  If it has been used to clean smoke for the house for whatwever reason I woudl start by havign the ducts cleaned.   Another possibility I have seen is insolation inside of ductwork breaking down.
