Refrigerator not defrosting?

Hello William;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You freezer section goes into a defrost mode every 8-10 hours,where your unit shuts down except for the lights, and your defrost heater turns on for 20-30 minutes.

You have a bad defrost heater. If the defrost heater does not come on, then after several days your cooling coil will become blocked with ice and you will not get air flow thru it. Your evaporator (Cooling) fan may also lock up.

Test your heater. You did not provide a model number, so I do not know what type heater you have. Some heaters are steel bars and some are glass tubes with wire inside. They all test the same. You will need a multi-meter.
Set the meter to the lowest Ohms (Omega Symbol). Disconnect the two ends of the heater. With the meter, place one meter lead on one heater contact end and place the other meter lead on the other end. You should get some reading. It could be 25, 50, 150 something. If the meter reads '0' or infinity the heater is bad.

Kenmore upright freezer

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I am going to assume your compressor and condenser fan is running. Your condenser fan is in the lower back of your freezer.

You will need to remove the back cover in your freezer. There are 6 screws holding it on.

Check the following (Cover Removed):

1.) Frozen Drain - Your freezer goes into a defrost mode every 8-10 hours, where your freezer shuts down except for the lights, and your defrost heater turns on for about 20-30 minutes to defrost your cooling coil. If you have a frozen drain, the condensate builds up behind the back wall and icing the cooling coil, restricting air flow. You must defrost the coil.

2.) Freezer Fan Motor Failure - Having removed the back wall observe if the freezer fan motor is running. If not replace.

3.) Refrigerant Restriction or Leak - If you observe a large build-up of ice in the upper right hand corner, then you have a restriction or leak. The cost of repair would be about $400.00

4.) Bad Thermostat - In the upper right hand corner of you cooling coil, attached is your thermostat. They can explode, where the back of the thermostat will raise up.

You can also check it with a multi-meter, set to the lowest Ohms (Omega Symbol). You need to cut the wires, leaving enough wire length to rewire back in. Put the thermostat in a glass of ice water for 10 minutes. After, it should Ohm out around 16. It is reads '0' or infinity it is bad. Below 15 or 16 it is bad

Freezer section is cold but refrigerator section will not cool because of ice build up on evaporator coils in freezer and air can not flow to refrigerator side. I manually defrosted it two weeks ago but...

Find defrost timer normally located behind the cover plate for the fresh food temperature thermostat. It will have a one way adjustable screw head on it. Turn the screw slowly until you hear a click (this would normally be where the defrost would begin) leave in this position for an hour or until you hear compressor kick back on. If you have water in catch pan of refrigerator you have bad timer. Otherwise you have bad heater or defrost thermostat. To check heater and thermostat I would go to parts site on Internet and type in model no. And see if they have diagnosis videos on this or similar ref. Otherwise buy the heaters and thermostat remove shelves, ice maker etc. To get to the liner of ref. Remove it and you can then remove and replace the heater and thermo. Be very careful as the cooling fins are sharp as razors.

Upper refrigerator not cooling

You either have a air flow problem or a defrost problem. Look at the back inside wall of the freezer. If it is iced over, you have a defrost problem. If not and you have no air flow you most likley have a fan problem.

Warm fridge

Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
