Receiving faxes with a Cisco ATA 186

I am using a Cisco ATA analog telephone adapter to connect a Dell MFP 1600n printer to a Cisco Phone network. I am able to send faxes, but not receive and print faxes.

When receiving a fax, the MFP 1600n makes the fax noise, and the display says receiving, but nothing prints.
Cisco says the baud rate of the fax needs to be lowered. Is this possible to do on this MFP 1600n?
Have you seen this probem before?
The Cisco ATA does send and receive on other faxes, so the Cisco ATA appears to be configured correctly.

Fax machine gives an intermitant ring, but does not auto answer, we have it on a broadband line using an ASDL filter, if you unplug the filter it works correctly?

I same issue and plug the Analog phone on the ATA. I was able to call from my mobile to the analog phone but cannot hear the voice coming back to me but can hear the voice from the mobile on the analog phone. Then tried the analog phone to call my another analog desk phone and able to make calls to mobile and desk phone successfully with voice going both sides.

looks more like a codec issue or Fax machine having higher baud rates. I think more of codec issue. Trying to sort this still now.

More investigation implies that faxing over VoIP, as I am doing, requires setting the fax BAUD rate to 9600 bps or slower. So does anyone know if it is possible to set the BAUD rate on the Dell MFP 1600n multifunction printers?

No dial tone on handset. can't send or recieve fax.

? Other equipment, which uses the same phone line as the HP All-in-One,
might be causing the test to fail. To find out if other equipment is causing a
problem, disconnect everything from the phone line, and then run the test
again. If the Dial Tone Detection Test passes without the other equipment,
then one or more pieces of the equipment is causing problems; try adding
them back one at a time and rerunning the test each time, until you identify
which piece of equipment is causing the problem.
? Try connecting a working phone and phone cord to the telephone wall jack
that you are using for the HP All-in-One and check for a dial tone. If you do
not hear a dial tone, contact your telephone company and have them check
the line.
? Make sure you have correctly connected the HP All-in-One to the telephone
wall jack. Using the phone cord supplied in the box with the HP All-in-One,
connect one end to your telephone wall jack, then connect the other end to
the port labeled 1-LINE on the back of the HP All-in-One.

If the supplied phone cord is not long enough, you can extend it. For
information, see The phone cord that came with my HP All-in-One is not long
enough.
Check the connection between the telephone wall jack and the HP All-in-One
to make sure the phone cord is secure.
Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One. If you
do not use the supplied phone cord to connect from the telephone wall jack
to the HP All-in-One, you might not be able to send or receive faxes. After
you plug in the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One, run the fax test
again.
If you are using a phone splitter, this can cause faxing problems. (A splitter is
a two-cord connector that plugs into a telephone wall jack.) Try removing the
splitter and connecting the HP All-in-One directly to the telephone wall jack.

splitter and connecting the HP All-in-One directly to the telephone wall jack.
If your telephone system is not using a standard dial tone, such as some
PBX systems, this might cause the test to fail. This will not cause a problem
sending or receiving faxes. Try sending or receiving a test fax.
Check to make sure the country/region setting is set appropriately for your
country/region. If the country/region setting is not set or is set incorrectly, the
test might fail and you might have problems sending and receiving faxes.
Make sure you connect the HP All-in-One to an analog phone line or you will
not be able to send or receive faxes. To check if your phone line is digital,
connect a regular analog phone to the line and listen for a dial tone. If you do
not hear a normal sounding dial tone, it might be a phone line set up for
digital phones. Connect the HP All-in-One to an analog phone line and try
sending or receiving a fax.
Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One. If you
do not use the supplied phone cord to connect from the telephone wall jack
to the HP All-in-One, you might not be able to send or receive faxes. After
you plug in the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One, run the fax test
again.
After you resolve any problems found, run the fax test again to make sure it
passes and the HP All-in-One is ready for faxing. If the Dial Tone Detection test
continues to fail, contact your telephone company and have them check the
phone line.

HOW TO EMAIL SCANNED DOCUMENTS FROM HP J4580 DIRECTLY?

It is not possible to email the scanned file directly through the printer. However, you may send fax over the Internet

You may subscribe to a low cost phone service that allows you to send and receive faxes with your device by using the Internet. This method is called Fax over Internet Protocol (FoIP). You probably use a FoIP service (provided by your telephone company) if you:
• Dial a special access code along with the fax number, or
• Have an IP converter box that connects to the Internet and provides analog phone ports for the fax connection.

NOTE: You can only send and receive faxes by connecting a phone cord to the port labeled "1-LINE" on the device. This means that your connection to the Internet must be done either through a converter box (which supplies regular analog phone jacks for fax connections) or your telephone company.

Some Internet faxing services do not work properly when the device is sending and receiving faxes at high speed (33600bps). If you experience problems sending and receiving faxes while using an Internet fax service, use a slower fax speed. You can do this by changing the Fax Speed setting from High (the default) to Medium. For information on changing this setting, see Set the fax speed. If you have questions about internet faxing, contact your internet faxing services
support department.

(Ref from the manual of the printer.)

Hope this helps.

Prints faint copies

If the print rubs off the page, this means the toner is not being fused to the page. Fused......this is done by the fuser. This would have nothing to do with light print.

The dell (1600n and 1815n /1815dn) printer drivers has a toner saver mode, which can contribute to light print.

To turn Toner Save Mode off, (Windows XP) perform the following steps:
  1. Click the Start button, click Settings, and then click Printer and Faxes.
The Printers and Faxes window appears.
  2. Right-click Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn, and left-click Printing Preferences.
The Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn Printing Preferences window appears.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
The Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn Advanced Options window appears.
  4. Click to highlight Toner Save.
  5. Click the drop-down list and change it to Off and click OK.
  6. Click OK.
One thing that you mentioned in your post "it takes the printer forever to warm up". The fuser does have to reach operational temperature in order for it to fuse the toner to the page. So it is possible that you are having fuser problems, because of the time it is taking for it to warm up. Another thing that can contribute to the warm up time is not plugging the laser printer directly into a wall outlet. This would be true for any laser printer, not just a Dell laser printer. The low voltage power supply is what works the fuser, along with sensors and other motors in the printer.

Replacing the fuser and or the low voltage power supply in this model of printer is not an easy task. If using a Dell branded toner cartridge and checking the toner saver mode does not fix the issue. Then you would be looking at more expense then the machine would possibly be worth.

VOIP will no ring

Just "VOIP Phone" is not enough information to help you. There are many hundreds of different phones, connections, & setups you could have. What type of phone (make, model number)? Is this a VOIP phone connected through a home network, cable modem etc.. for home use? Is it a single line phone connected to a VOIP box connected to your cable modem? Is it a VOIP phone system connected to regular copper phone lines? Are you using a VOIP phone at home connected to a VOIP phone system at work?
