According to Apple, iWork can handle AppleWorks files
If you still have access to your OS 9 machine, make sure you've updated to the latest version of AppleWorks.

I have the 8 disc set (mac version) purchased in the year 2000 working with OSX 9. Now I have a new mac with snow leopard version OSX 10. I would like to use the disc's with the new computer, what do I do?

Unfortunately the software will not work with OSX. OS9 (also refered to as classic os) had some compatibility with macs up to 2005 when Apple changed the processors in macs to Intel. Since then all OS9 software no longer works.
There is a small chance you may be able to browse/search the CD's folders for images as the photo objects may be in jpg/gif/png format. Try opening finder, select the CD. and search with the text box in the upper right corner in Finder.

I continue to get this message: An I/O error occurred when I am trying to open some of my Appleworks files. How do I repair them? I have had to transfer files from a G3 to an iMac. Now, when I go to...

This message is generally a result of file corruption NOT the HD or cable. Sometimes the file is recoverable but often it is not. Download a trial copy of Drive genius and DataRescue and run those. see if you can open the file after that.
I have had success by deleting the complete Appleworks folder and then reinstalling AW afresh.
There is also a body of thought that using an earlier version of AW (i.e. 6.2.4 instead of 6.2.9) can sometimes cure the problem.
The clue that the other answer is incorrect is that if it was true you would have this problem with every single file and the computer probably wouldn't work.

How do I open a Word 97 format (doc) on my Mac?

Haven't used Mac in a while but I believe you have to
1) Save the attachments to your hard drive or desktop.
2) Start the TextEdit or AppleWorks application
3) (If Appleworks) Start the Word Processor app
4) Try "File-Open" and locate the file(s) you wish to open

And I/O error occurred when trying to open an Appleworks doc

That message in Pages means the file is not an AppleWorks 6 file, possibly AppleWorks 5. Are you using the same version? Not all are backward compatible, or require you to have the compatibility pack installed.

No, Its a copyright (r) cd. Which obviously means you can't copy it. And if you did it would be illegal. Im not accusing you or anything, I'm just giving my solution.

If you need a newer version of Mac OS , you would have to purchase it. Mac OS does not update from 9.1 to 10.X
Mac 9.1 is about 10 years old.

In May 2002, at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, California, Steve Jobs, accompanied by a coffin, held a mock funeral[5] to announce that Apple had stopped development of Mac OS 9. Mac OS 9.2.2, introduced in December 2001, was the final version of Mac OS 9, and the end of the classic Mac OS.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Error -37

Hi, sorry you are having problems,
Well, here is what error -37 is: Code: error -37 bdNamErr Description: Bad file name (File System Error)
Basically, it is saying you cannot save a file by that name in that place....
Did you try saving it elsewhere on your Mac, like on the desktop ?
Just a side note, Apple stopped development on AppleWorks some time ago ( 3 years ) in favour of iWork. I highly recommend getting the newest version of iWork 09, it's compatible with all your Works documents and is really built for MacOS X 10.5, Leopard.
What do you mean whe you say “ Before I reimaged the machine ..” ?
