Question about Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor Lens

1 Answer

Lens Problem I emailed this on 2/20 got one response for more info and did not receive anymore help. My AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-70mm lens will not focus in. The lens ring nearest to the camera (where the ft and m are) spins back and forth and does not focus in to take a picture. Once in awhile it will but about 99% of the time it just spins as if it were trying to focus. This does not happen when I take outdoor pictures, just indoor shots. Please help

The only problem with doing this repair yourself, is that upon re-assembly you will need the Nikon software and hardware to readjust and calibrate the lens. Try sending it to PhotoTech Repair Service in NYC. They are Nikon authorized, and can do the repair under warranty if you still have it. Also if you join they're facebook page, they will give you a 10% discount.
Here is the facebook page link, it has everything you need to send it in.

What is 55-200mm?

That's the focal range of a zoom lens. Unlike a single focal-length lens (or a "prime" lens) a zoom lens lets you adjust the focal range. "55-200mm" specifies the lens's focal range from 55mm at the low end to 200mm at the long end.

You can read a general description of zoom lenses at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoom_lens

Nikon current has two different 55-200mm lenses:

If you're asking about the L110, it has a permanently-affixed lens and will not use either of the above lenses.

I have a Nikon D3100 and want to buy a zoom lens 70-300.Please help I am confused is a Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G compatible? And is it automatic focus?

That lens will work with the D3100, except for the autofocusing. In order to autofocus with the D3100, you need AF-S lenses, such as the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED or the
AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR.

The lens is frozen at 55mm. It was not dropped or misused in any way.

I work as a lens repair technician.
Maybe i can help you or give you a little bit of info
about what is wrong with your lens.
It looks like it is af-s dx nikkor 18-55 type l lens to me.
You mentioned frozen. What is the meaning of frozen?
does it mean it is not shooting in 55mm? or af does not work at all?

Which camera are you using? If the body has AF/MF switch, put that also to MF.If this fails to help, take out the lens and try to change it to MF.

The internal circuit board, or the internal harness may be at fault. You will have to send the lens to Nikon for service.
