Question about Arris SURFboard SB5120 Modem

1 Answer

I have been with Comcast for 6 years. Leasing their SB5120 modem for 3-4 years, no problem. Then bought one myself and no problem for 2 years with Negtar wireless router. For the past few days, it started to have problem - only light up to receive, no send or internet lights lit. Please advise. Thank you.

Generally a wireing issue or signal issue i assume by this time you have it fixed by the date. you can check 192.168.100.1 in a web browser and it should show the signals. if recieve is flashing then the downstream is either out of range or something else. it wont go to upstream until it locks onto downstream first.

I think its the modem that you need to upgrade. Comcast is already running on DOCSIS 3.0 system. The SB5120 modem that you have is a DOCSIS 2.0 modem. You may need to have your modem replaced with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem like the Motorola SB6120.

Port Forward on Comcast Motorola SB5120

Are you just using a modem and NO router? This modem has no NAT so there is no way to open ports.

Internet connection issue. Is it setup or internet service

The problem would be comcast. Your connections are setup correctly. The modems do not control the internet traffic flow, they are made to produce maximum flow.
If more people use the internet, the less flow it will have.
Check all internet options settings, and make sure EVERTHING is set to automatic

Cannot set up Motorola Surfboard SB5120 modem

This usually means something is not correct with your incoming signal. If your cable wire into the modem is being run off an amplifier in the wall this could be effecting your service. If the signal is too strong the modem won't be able to communicate for internet.

You could check the incoming wire to see if it is running off an amplifier. If it is you would need to run a new line that is not on the amplifier. I would recommend comcast coming out to check the signal frequency and make the necessary adjustments.

Loss of internet connection

Sounds like a switch before the signal gets to your house. Modems usually don't go out intermittently unless they are overheating. Is the modem in a ventilated area where it can get some air? An alternate is to borrow a modem from a friend to test it. Usually one of your niehbors will have the same service and the same modem. I had my surfboard (from comcast) for 5 years and it was solid as a rock, the spotty services was always at the Comcast switches (at the street or the nearest hub.

Hope this helps
