Depending if you have a ajustment on the bowl you will need to ajust to get the right mixture if this will not fix your problem then you will need your carb rebuilt

Just pouring the old gas out is not enough in most cases.the fuel, fuel filter if equipped and the carburator are contaminated and or gummed up were it will require a complete carb. rebuild

Check the fuel line to the tank, and see if another one is inside, maybe it fell off, or it's filter is clogged.

13 hp tecumseh riding mower won't start unless gas is poured into carb. removed the bowl from carb has a wire snap holder float and needle and seat works OK and all passageways seem to be clean

hi
remove the bowl again and get the centre jet out and lok very closely use a jewlers eye piece you wll find a passage that is plugged on the side of the jet look around it you ll see some sign of a hole that is not clear through its pretty small use a welders torch cleanng tool with various size rods use very thin one dont make the hole bigger

Lightly tap the CARB after or while cranking. If the vehicle has been in-op, the fuel in the bowl would have gone bad or dried out leaving a degree of corrosion behind. After soaking in fuel overnight, Tapping may permit the float to drop opening the needle valve. Chk the accelerator pump by working the throttle linkage. kEY OFF! lOOK INTO THE CARB TO VERIFY ACCELERATOR PUMP FUNCTION.. If you are pumping fuel, it should start. If no fuel, The pump may have dried up. Again, a good soaking overnight may swell up the plunger in the pump enough to get it working. Worse case scenario if none of this works is rebuild the CARB. Good Luck and be careful. _N_

I bought a 1985 GS 550 LF. It had been sitting for a year, so battery was dead tank & carbs were dirty, clutch cable was broke. I fixed the clutch cable, cleaned the gas tank, bought a new battery and...

Gas pouring out of the carbs means the float pin are not sealing in thus the over flow.
Go a little down thn .77in , best would be to bench set them.
Take a pipe say from the tank to the feed pipe of the carbs (best would be to remove the tank and place it higher on your work bench to get the gravity flow to the feed pipe of the carbs)
Allow the flow to the carbs and monitor the over flow, see which carbs over flow, remove the float bowl and reset the float and let it go a little less thn .77in, refit the bowl and retry the feed in and recheck..you will come to a point where gas wont over flow, open the bowl and see the level of the gas , it should be covering the jets, but remember that since you will have the float bowl out the gas will show low as when its submersed, the jet stem in the float bowl pushes the gas level up so dont get mixed up when you see the level low , i am sure you will be able to judge it for yourself.
I had the same problem in myYamaha(seca) XJ750R !981and finally managed to win over the problem going over it the way I explained.
Hope this helps! Good luck.

I have an older mercury 4hp 2 cyl. Wont run. got lots of spark, gas was running out of carb, took it off, cleaned it out, but I might have the spring on the float in wrong. does anyone have a scematic?

Ok, if you have fuel coming out of the throat of the carb then you need to readjust the float level. On that engine the best way to set the float level is to remove the carb. Remove the fuel bowl. Turn the carb upside down so the float is on top of the carb. You want to bend the tang (the piece that seats the inlet needle) so that if you are looking at the float it sits perfectly level. Once you reinstall the bowl and carb be sure to adjust your idle mixture and try it again. If it still spews out of the carb throat then take it back apart and do it again. If the inlet needle point is worn at all then you need to replace it so that it seats good. But if you set the float it is level when the carb is upside down you should not have a problem. You can put your faith in the fact that every spring I rebuild about 5 outboard carbs a day from people letting fuel sit during the winter.

Honda 5.5 HP starts & dies

had the same problem with my Honda engined mower. you can't see it easily, but there is a very fine screen in the outlet of the fuel tank that gets blocked and fuel will not pass thru it fast enough to refill carb. remove tank and pour fuel in another container . Use a flexible plastic tube in the outlet or make a small wire hook to penetrate the screen,or preferably, remove it. confirm that fuel flows freely thru it, remove any debris, and reassemble. Change spark plug, add fresh fuel, and test. best of luck!!!! Ray
