Yes, it's not unusual for the outside to be too hot to touch. A slow cooker won't get as hot as a bare burner on the stove, but it still gets hot enough to cook meat. The outside has a bit of insulation, but it still may get hot enough to cause pain, melt a bread bag, etc. Be sure and place it where no one will accidentally touch it.

Outside of crockpot gets very hot and countertop is extremely hot after cooking for a couple of hours

This sounds normal. put the unit on something to protect counter. It is very difficult to heat long term, without the unit becoming quite hot.

I use my crock pot on low and it leaves yellow stains on my counter top. It has never got the counter that hot before to leave burn marks is there something going out on it?

Its insulation is probably gone bad. I would stop using it now, but if you must, put it on a fireproof surface, like your driveway....seriously, spend $30 and get a new one this could be a fire hazard!

My Rival 3745 4.5-Quart Slow Cooker heats up so hot on the outside and underneath the unit, that it melted a hard plastic cutting board and I was unable to touch the kitchen counter under the cutting board...

sounds like the thermo is not controling the tempt . the heat should bi inside . although the outer may get very hot it should not be as hot as you stated . now if some washed it. and gave it a good dunking then the insul may me wet and the bottom get's to hot. this will require serviceing . ****

Good and bad complaints.

Generally, they are all supposed to be good. It all depends on how we use them. You have undoubtedly been careful with your crock pot to have had it serve you for 30 years! Unfortunately, not all consumers are as careful as you.

Yes, there are instance when a particular line or batch may be faulty due to some manufacturing defects, but these show up immediately, and can always be replaced under warranty.

Don't go by complaints, etc you see on the net. These are the exceptions rather than the rule. That is the nature of ALL electronic/electrical goods - they are bound to fail at some time or the other. (That why we have sites like Fixya!) :) The complaints that you see are exactly that - complaints from a few people who either happened to get a defective product, or haven't used it carefully. The majority, however, are happy with their products :)

Hope that helped!

Outside of Crock Pot Extremely Hot....Is This Normal?

This is not normal. Thermal switch is not functioning correctly. Wiring inside not easy to replace. Crock pots cause a lot of home fires. Cheaper to simply buy a new one.
