Most Dell LCDs have multiple inputs and they will go into "standby" while waiting for a signal from your PC. This happens when your PC goes into "sleep" mode or if you are sure your PC is not in "sleep" mode then usually the LCD is not in the correct input selection. Check the input selection for the appropriate input. As always, make sure the cables are securely connected. Hope this helps.

I'm confused as to how you're connecting this with s-video. Are you using an RGB / s-video adapter?

What is the exact monitor brand / model?

I have my acer p205h 20 inch monitor hooked up to my tobshiba laptop and it works great except it will not go into sleep mode when laptop goes into sleep mode the monitor goes to there is not signal check...

Unfortunately, this is a standard problem, as when your laptop goes into sleep mode, it shuts off power to the secondary monitor, without giving it the signal to go into sleep mode. You could try digging around your settings, but most likely you'll just need to turn off the monitor when you're not using it.

If it goes in to sleep mode, that means that the monitor is not getting a signal from the computer.
The things to try (from simplest to most complex) are:

Make sure the computer is on and not in "sleep" mode -- press the "Caps Lock" key and see if it lights up the caps-lock light on the keyboard.
Make sure the video cable is connected from the computer to the monitor (that the cable hasn't come loose on either end)
If your monitor has multiple inputs, make sure it's set to the right (probably analog VGA or DVI) input
If your computer has more than one video output (like a laptop with it's internal screen plus the external monitor) then make sure the external monitor is enabled

Monitor goes to sleep when computor is turned on no input signal

If the monitor is going into sleep mode the normal power led will change to another color. This indicates loss of video signal or possible out of range resolution. If the picture goes dark and the power lite stays on, you have a backlight malfunction. It can be bad capacitors causing an inverter power fault or it may have worn out backlights causing a shutdown condition.

Monitor wont come out of sleep mode

One possiblility will be the failing power supply due to bad caps (leaking/bulging tops). You can take a look inside first before making the decison to buy a new one or not.

I found this on the Internet...

"Press the "Input" button on your LCD monitor's front panel repeatedly at three- or four-second intervals until your monitor wakes up. If your monitor is set to an incorrect input mode, it won't receive a video signal. After you reset the monitor to the proper input mode, it will receive the signal and wake up automatically."

TRY UNPLUGGING COMPUTER AND MONITOR AND DISCONNECTING MONITOR FROM THE BACK OF THE COMPUTER. BE SURE TO UNPLUG AND NOT TURN OFF. WAIT ONE MINUTE THEN PLUG COMPUTER BACK IN . RECONNECT MONITOR TO THE BACK OF THE COMPUTER AND PLUG IN. IF THIS WORKS, WAIT FOR NEW HARDWARE RECOGNIZED TO COME ON. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, IF ANY. RESTART COMPUTER.

Unplug the monitor (HP vs 15) and plug it in again worked immediately for me. Thanks. (While doing this monitor data cable was disconnected from VGA)
