Can the PHILIPS DVP 3350 play avi and mpeg video files from external harddisc through its USB input?

You need to convert avi files to dvd format before burning, otherwise the player won't recognize them. Google "avi to dvd" and you'll find a number of free or pay programs that will do the conversion for you.

I would guess that it's an incompatible disk format. If your burning software allows you to pick different types check the Philips manual for a compatible format

Of course, it cant. DVD player will only accept VOB files, so u have to convert your mkv and avi video files to VOB.
And i always use Pavtube Video Converter(http://www.pavtube.com/video_converter/) to help me transcode video files. It can convert between any video files in an easy way.
U just need it to help u convert video files to vob so that you can watch movies on your dvd player
