Does not power stay on

Hello, I am checking my nephew's toshiba satellite m35sx-s149. When the power button is pressed the fan starts and run for about 5 seconds, then shuts down. The screen never comes on. The light around the power button stays on but there is no indication that the laptop is working. When I hold the power button in for several seconds the unit turns off.

I tried connecting an external monitor to see if a windows splash screen would appear, but got the same result. Are notebooks known for poor quality?

Thanks, Robert

Thanks, I tried it with just the ac power and the battery removed but got the same results. The fan shut off after 5 seconds or so.

It is out of warranty. Thanks for your help!

  • BobFY Feb 22, 2008

It was purchased in Dec 2004. There have been other problems over the past few years and it has gone back and forth to Toshiba 3 times. Their experience with Toshiba tech support was not very favorable. From what I can see replacement mother boards run from $150 - $400 with no guarantee.

I'm having the very same problem. Fan runs for 5 seconds and the unit never comes on. Till it gets good and ready.

I have the same problem. I found that if you push down firmly above the keyboard where the heatsink and cpu are that it will turn on and run when you press the power button. The problem is that it doesn't always work, and when you move the laptop at all, it goes back out. I also tried reseating the cpu but same problem.

I am having the same exact problem. I have tore the system down all the way to memory, motherboard, and LCD. The fan stops spinning after about 5 seconds. Sometimes the system will post (with the fan stopped), but as soon as I touch the keyboard, the video goes out and the system freezes. I am a certified technician with years of experience. I personally believe this is a motherboard issue. The portable is out of warranty, so I am not going to know for sure until I replace the motherboard. Since this is such a common issue, Toshiba should replace the motherboard (regardless of warranty status). I will never purchase a Toshiba again.

Try this with just the ac plugged in and the battery removed. Sometimes the battery, when fully discharged, can cause the system to shut down.

Hello my toshiba satellite m35-s149 dos not boot power button stays on I can hear fan and also hearr it beep. but theres nothing on screen if u can giv me some advice appreciate it thanx

If you can hear the startup music, try plugging the laptop into a regular monitor and press FN+F5 to view your operating system. This will mean that your backlight has blown and you need to replace the screen. If not, oh boy, it could mean that your motherboard may have taken a dive. Before you trash it replace the meory chips, just in case they have become defective.

Computer does start up

Does it not seem to get power? This is a common issue with the S149. If you have a charged extra battery or one from a similar Toshiba laptop like the S311 you can see if it starts with a charged battery. If it does the problem is likely the soldered connection on the motherboard for the power cord. This commonly breaks and causes the laptop to not run off the power cord and not charge the battery, but it will run from a charged battery. If this is the case you will need to resolder the power connector to the motherboard. The laptop must be disassembled to make the repair. If you do not have the tools, knowledge or experience to do this or the solder job then you will need to locate a technician that can.

Toshiba Satellite P200 doesn't boot

Try pressing FN/F5 keys simultaneously, or the key that toggles internal/external Display. Look for the double screen Icons on the keys.

Tap the Pause Key.

Restart and press and hold F8 key when Toshiba logo appears. When the boot Menu appears, select Last Known Good Configuration.

If all else fails ther should be a reset button on the side of the LT. Consult owners Manual for location
