Question about Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LSQ9549L Top Load Washer
Look on the lid. see where the prong is.
look on the washer where the prong goes. try to clean that spot, lots of times it's got a build up of lint . the initial wash cycle will moisten the build up preventing it to function properly.

Mommy20255 is spot on to the solution. The prong/latch assembly in my machine is broken. As it is wired into the machine, I will have to call a repairman, but she led me straight to the problem. (The picture is of the broken unit taken upside down.)
