Dyson DC28 Air Muscle Vacuum that is stuck in upright position

I have a Dyson DC28 Air Muscle Vacuum that I can't release from the upright position. Normally I put my foot on the area that they recommend to unlock the upright positioning, as to vacuum like you would normally do with an upright (when you are not going to be using the attachments). It is jammed and I feel if I apply any more pressure I am going to break something within the mechanical functioning. What do you recommend?

This turns out to be an easy fix.

First, get some graphite lube.

Lay the vac on it's 'face'.

1) On the underside of the vacuum, there is a 1/2" wide 'groove" in the motor housing, that runs up the centerline of the machine. Follow this groove from the front of the machine towards the back. As you follow it 'up' into the machine, the groove will 'end'. Just past this point there will be a small black plastic piece with little 'ears' that is resting in another groove that continues just past the point where the first groove ended. This is the upright position lock that isn't releasing. (I've painted the 'ears' red in the attached photo)

2) Using a screwdriver, or butter knife, etc, gently lift this piece out of the groove. The vacuum head should now easily tilt down like it should.

3) Flip the vacuum over onto it's 'back' and you will be able to see the grooves, now visible on the front of the lower head. Apply the graphite to the smaller (upper) groove and try working the unit in and out of the upright position several times to work the graphite into the locking mechanism

Thank you for this help. I have had Dyson's for years but never had this problem until I bought the Animal yesterday, but have it working again.

Thanks for being there for us!

Your post was of great help. The only think I did different was I cleaned the area once I got it released and sprayed a bit of furniture polish on it.

I am having this problem and I can not see how you fix it!! I have had it less than a year and I don't think I should be having this problem with any vacuum! Help please

  • Cassi Kaehn Jun 01, 2013

You DO NOT have to take your machine to a "certified technician" to fix this stupid problem and guess what ladies! You also don't have to be equipped with a ***** to fix it! See the photo above????? Simply slide a thin, flat-head screwdriver down and magically the machine will release. NOW: once it's released, simply examine the area where your screwdriver JUST slid down...see the dirt and gunk? DON'T follow the MANY suggestions of adding lubricant "which only works for a short while" (by their own admission) WIPE AWAY THE DIRT AND GUNK and voilia! YOU are now a "certified technician" and you didn't have to sit through any technical school to get there! You go girl!!!!!!!

Cassi - you mind pointing out where it says graphite (dry) lube only lasts a short while ? Mine has been fine for over 2 years now..........

Thanks for this great tip, llmwaynew . I was able to lower my power head and the lubrication made it much easier to use as intended. All it took was a tiny squirt of white grease from an aerosol can that promises to stay in place and not wash away. We shall see...
In addition to fixing the stuck powerhead, my vacuum cleaner now works properly. Lowering the powerhead also seems to trigger the closure of an air passage to the upper vacuum wand.
Simply releasing the powerhead with a screwdriver wasn't enough in my case. Perhaps a combination of lubrication and sliding the mechanism back and forth several times did the trick.
For now this fix has brought my machine back to better than original.
Fabulous!

How do you get it to click/stay in the upright position? I just used it and I can't get it to stay in the upright position for storage...Thanks in advance for you help.

The Dyson manuals for pretty much all of the uprights don't show any particular 'click' to full upright: they just tell you to put a foot on the bottom part of the unit and pull backward to put it into vacuum mode. There is some sort of sensor or mechanical engagement in there, since putting the system to full-upright is how you switch it from floor mode to attachment mode (coming of of the handle).

A couple of things to try - follow your manual (PDF Can be seen here Dyson DC28 Animal User Guide ) to try removing and then re-seating the hose assembly into the base of the unit (the bottom connector). I've seen other guidance to that being necessary to have the floor-to-hose switch-over work properly, which might, in turn, be the root of your problem. Likewise, with the unit turned on, see if it will switch to attachment mode (air being sucked through the top of the handle) if you push the back as far forward as you can. If it won't switch, that also points to seating of the tubing assembly not being right.

Good Luck :-)

Why won't my Dyson DC28 animal handle won't tilt down to vacuum

Hi Robert, it's Jack at Dyson.

If you're having difficulty reclining your DC28 from the upright position, it's possible something like a pen or pencil has been accidentally vacuumed up, and is jamming the changeover valve.

Our Support guide should help you check for this: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc28/dc28-animal/using-my-dyson-list/redirect-to-flo-dc07-gen-how-to-remove-a-blockage/flo-dc07-gen-how-to-remove-a-blockage/redirect-to-check-ubend-cover-dc28/check-ubend-cover-dc28

If you'd like some further advice from our experts after you've given this a try, please call us directly on 1-866-693-9766 (US) or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

When I try to release the handle on my Dyson DC28 by stepping on the foot print on the machine, the handle will not release.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC28. The cleaner should recline easily into the vacuuming position when one foot is placed on the cleaner head, and the handle is lowered. If it's not doing this, check the clear u-bend at the rear of the machine for obstructions. For guidance on doing this, please see the link to our Support page below:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1236&product=DC28-ANIMAL

After removing any blockages from the u-bend, stand the cleaner upright, and try reclining it again. It might be worth using a little more force than usual, in case the upright lock mechanism has jammed. If this doesn't help, or if you're reluctant to try this, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you, and provide further assistance. Handle on dc28 has been hard to put back since new but now won't move at all. Stuck in upright potion.

You DO NOT have to take your machine to a "certified technician" to fix
this problem. Stand behind your machine, lean
over and look at the front: Right in the center of the slit between the
machine and the beater bar head, you will see a black tab. Simply slide a
thin, flat-head screwdriver down and magically the machine will
release. NOW: once it\'s released, simply examine the area where your
screwdriver JUST slid down...see the dirt and gunk? DON\'T follow the
MANY suggestions of adding lubricant "which only works for a short
