Oiler doesn't seem to work. Think its plugged with sawdust, but I can't figure out how to clean it

Oil System Plugged.

  1. Remove the clutch cover, bar, and chain, clean the bar groove, any holes and passages on the rear of the bar (both sides, consider rotating the bar), if equipped with a sprocket nose ensure it rotates easily at least one complete revolution. Clean the saw oiler hole and channel. Insert a blunted, hooked piece of wire through the oil filler hole and pull the hose in the oil tank out. Pay attention to the screen or filter on the free end (clean or replace, difficult to determine serviceability). Start the saw and see if it oils when revved up. If yes reassemble your saw. If no, continue with 2.
  2. Work your way through the linkage cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go. Carefully check the hoses for cracks especially at bends and connections. If equipped with an oil pump it is usually behind the clutch (clutch is a left handed thread). Please make extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly.
If it does not oil on completion of 1 it is most likely a bad oiler or worm gear. Post back with a model and serial number plus what you have done, we will help you with repair/replacement. HTH

Styhl 270 running warmer than it should and bar oiler not oiling enough


Sounds as if it needs a good cleaning out , sawdust jammed into cooling fins and oil groove of chain bar will cause not enough oil to flow , compressed air is a great help for cleaning out stuck sawdust !!! (wear glasses !!))

Checking your chain oiler


Chain oilers are a vital part of keeping your saw running well. No oil can even cause the chain to bind up. Over a period of time it can greatly increase the wear rate of your bar and chain reducing it's life. Chain oilers seldom go bad they just get clogged up with sawdust.

Remove the housing that covers that bar and sprocket. There are two plates on each side of the bar that set over the studs.They may be identical or slightly different depending on the saw but at least one of them will have a hole in it for the oiler. If you remove the bar and both plates you will see the oiler hole on the saw housing. This oiler injects oil through the plate and into a small hole in the bar where the chain picks it up and carries it around the saw. If this hole becomes plugged with sawdust it will keep your saw from oiling the bar proplerly. This hole should be cleaned out periodically. It's not a bad idea to remove the whole chain periodically and clean the chain guide all the way around the bar and get any sawdust buildup out so the oil can flow better.

The oil pump on our electric chainsaw is not working


First remove the chain and bar and inspect the oil slot that lines up with the oiler opening in the side of the engine block. You may find it plugged with impacted sawdust. Next inspect the oiler opening itself for blockage.

Stop sawdust shavings from coming in the carburetor section and where is the oiler adjustment?chain seems dry.


Sawdust is normal, however keeping the chain sharp goes a long way in reducing sawdust on the carb filter. A dust brush is good to clear the filter of sawdust each gas or oil fillup. Most chainsaws do not have an oil adjustment. One must check the Bar where the oil is pumped in for sawdust and clear it or reduced oiling will result.

The automatic chain oiler does not get oil to the chain. Yes, it has chain oil. The black tube to the top chamber at the bar, seems to be plugged and I cant get it off to clean it out. Thanks, Steve


I have never seen an automatic chain oiler that worked. Even new ones don't seem to work. Just pour a little used engine oil on the bar once in awhile like everyone else does.
In theory there is a small piston that rubs on an eccentric at the chain sprocket, and that sucks in oil and pushes it through a hole, into the center groove of the bar.
But if the piston is dry, it won't pump.
If the holes are clogged with sawdust, it won't work.

Jonsered cs 2250 fixed flow oiler can the oiling rate be increased i think its not getting enough as the chain is running almost dry

Flymo 2200 chain oil leak when machine is running


That chainsaw should leak oil off the bar. A small amount of oil flipping off the chain is how it is suppose to work. If it is a large amount of oil dripping from near the sprocket then you probably need to do some cleaning.

I'm looking for a way to adjust the E-Brake on my Homelite 18" Chain Saw. Its model UT10830. The Saw runs great it just seems that the Brake keeps it from cutting properly by not allowing the chain to turn...


remove the nuts that hold the bar & the screws that hold the cover on.w/ brake off,remove cover.inside cover you will find 'band' brake that surrounds sprocket assembly.if adjustment is provided,it will be at one end of the band.it's more likely to be an accumulation of sawdust interfering w/brake.also clean sawdust from chain oiler holes in bar,and around sprocket while you've got it apart.slacken chain adjuster screw to aid re-assembly,re-adjust chain

Chain oiler does not seem sufficient


The chain oiler injects oil into the rear of the bar where the cover mounts over the sprocket. Take the bar off and clean out the oiler hole. There is usually some buildup of sawdust in the hole. Clean out the grove that the chain guide runs in all the way around the bar. You can see the injector nozzle under where that bar was when you removed it. Sometimes there is an ajusting screw there to increase oil flow.
