Washing machine - drum off-center, screeching sound in spin cycle

Hi,

we have an old commercial washer in our house. It's a Wascomat Junior W75 Double Loader. It's been working fine for 3 years and counting.

Lately, though, we have been noticing a screeching sound coming from the machine during the spin cycle. Upon closer inspection it looks as though the drum axle is slightly off center as the drum wobbles slightly both during regular and spin cycles.

Please check out these two videos I recorded to illustrate the problem.

I am wondering whether this is serious or a normal condition. What can I do to fix this?

All tips and information would be very helpful - thank you!

Hi, Probably you need to level it with a 2ft or 4ft level, be sure to check it on all 4 sides. Or the wobbling is normally caused by defective dampers. Just like car suspension, these even-out the vibrations of the drum. When worn, the drum just bounces wildly on its springs. The metallic banging should be avoided by foam buffers fitted inside. These frequently fall off unnoticed. They just need gluing back on with impact adhesive. Check this site nd rotate the cursor on the parts to see the diagram of damper... http://www.repairclinic.com/Washing-Machine-Front-Load-Frigidaire-GE-Kenmore-Style-Appliance-Diagram Let us know if you were looking for something more else please accept the suggestion. Can I safely use my washer if I hear something metal scraping during spin cycle?

You can, but I wouldn't. The outer skin of the drum is made of plastic. If it is a coin, it could dislodge, get caught again in mid spin and punch a hole straight through the plastic.

Get a flashlight and look between the seal and the outer drum when you open the door.

Hi, I have a frigidaire front load washer, model FTF2140ESO, that is making a high pitched screeching noise when it enters into the final spin cycle. The noise ramps up in volume as the drum spins faster....

Some times screws can work their way out near the drum and rub against the drum causing the squeak. You might have to take off the back of the washer and see if there is anything loose contacting the drum.

Drum shakes during spin cycle

I have a 7 year old duet washer. It started to shake during the spin cycle. It is level and the shocks and springs holding the drum are working. When the washer gets to the spin cycle, it is apparent that the drum is off center.
I tore the machine apart and found that there is a bracket at the back of the drum. This bracket sits in water so it was covered in slime. I found several large cracks in the bracket. Once these cracks occur, there is now way the drum can spin correctly. The bracket is welded to the back of the drum, so it has to be completely replaced.
What a poor design. I would guess that many, many other people will be seeing the same problem within a couple years. I was lucky in that I did not pay for a repairman to try to fix it.

I'm having a similar problem. Mine sounds like there is something behind the drum, like maybe a coin or loose nut? It screeches horribly.
