Question about Canon i80 InkJet Printer

Colour Ink Tank error

I'm getting an error message saying that the colour ink tank is not installed. I have replaced both tanks (with new) a couple of times and have replace the printer head assembly. Any ideas how to proceed? Thanks

    I have the same error 'saying colour ink cartridge not installed' but have also purchased original canon cartridges and does not seem to recognise the ink tank even though its there! The small microswitch is being pushed down so can only assume its some sort of error message in its chip or something. Have messed around trying to reset it but with no luck - can anyone please help as its a nice printer! thanks

    Yes , I have the same problem, is there anyway to turn of the colour print option so that it will print only in black ????

    i'm having the same problem with an ip90.



    it happened about a month ago and i played around with the switch with the tip of a pocket knife, and eventually it (somehow) worked.



    then i didn't use printer for a couple of weeks, went to print something today, and... same error back again.



    the fact that i got it to work once led me to believe it was a physical problem with the switch / sensor / connection, but... perhaps it's not?

    Same problem. Replaced the color cartridge and get the message that the color ink tank is not installed. Can't do anything - clean, test print, align, nothing.

    same problem here!
    "colour ink tank is not installed"...???
    it used to work just fine but now it's not.
    Isn't there anyone who know how to solve this?

    I have the same problem. I have replaced the color ink cartridge and it continues to display the error message "error number: 64 the following ink tank is not installed - color" Very frustrating! Can anyone help?

I have the same problem, so far no solution found.
Still searching, it is not the microswitch and it is not the printhead, some board assy i think.
Suggestion from Canon: send it in for repair, $100 !

Color tank isn't installed --- but it is!


Make sure that all tickers are off from the tank and clean the housing good and run self clean first and reset the printer

MP500 ink tank cannot be recognized error U043


I had the same problem. My mp630 is also only 4 months old. I replaced all colour ink cartrdiges(inc black), but was only able to release the function for detecting the ink levels for magenta and cyan. Yellow and black then started giving error message U043, with them alternating between working, but never working at the same time. Getting them all clicked in with the lights glowing red does not solve the problem, as once the printer cover is closed, the same error message turns up. The only thing that worked for me is moving the chip slightly out of alignment, by pushing the sliding chip holder, and I only had to do this twice before they all started working and the printer was unlocked.

When installing or replacing an ink tank, only one of the ink tanks should be installed. If the ink tank is not installed correctly, an error message will display.Press on the tab to release the ink tank, then remove it from its slot. If you are replacing multiple ink tanks, make sure to replace one by one.
Give a thorough check up to confirm any colour ink is not twice loaded (cannot be loaded in a single slot,may be in another slot )
May be any defective ink cartridges

IP4200 duplicate ink tanks.


Hello there scubadave,

I've gotten in touch with Canon and have somethinga little different to try. At the very least the error should change.(Sorry, gallows humor). Please read this entire response before takingaction.

After the upcoming test procedure, I have included alink and procedure to contact Canon tech support. The assure me theywill replace any faulty tanks.

The purpose of this exercise iseither rule out ink tanks that are behaving or isolate the one(s)responsible for the dupliucate error. You should write down the results of thistest. Please perform the following:

1. Open the printer and remove all ink tanks.

2. Insert a single ink tank in the printer then close the cover.

3.Confirm whether the printer recognizes the installed tank properly. Ifit does, it will indicate it does not detect the other ink tanks, asthey are not currently installed in the printer.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 with another ink tank.

5.If the printer at any time indicates two of the same ink tanks areinstalled, the cause will be the last tank installed. For example, ifyou inserted an ink tank earlier, and you later inserted another inktank, and it said two of the same inks were installed, the cause of theissue is the last ink tank.

I have replaced the <color in> question> tank, reseated it, yet the error continues.

Youwill also need to list what inks are being used in the printer. Statethe type of ink that is being used and the order that the tanks areinstalled in the print head.
Provide the exact part number (such as BCI-6C, BCI3eBk, etc.) if possible.

The Canon support rep assured me they will be glad to replace the malfunctioning tank(s) for you at no cost. Please
respond with the test results, and specify the ink tank(s) that were not recognized correctly.

They responded quickly, professionally and apologetically. They want to help get this resolved for you.

My printer won't print because there is more than one inktank of the same colour


There are 2 types of black cartridge, CLI-8Bk Black Ink Tank & PGI-5 Pigment Black Ink Tank. These must be installed in the correct order as below. Have you replaced a black cartridge & perhaps used a different type?
