Question about Apple Studio (Metallic Silver) 15" LCD Monitor

I bought 2nd hand Apple Studio 15" monitor without power supply- where can I find one not over £50? Is there a generic supply I could use or is it locked down to apple supplies, which are thin on the ground for a monitor this old... Thanks

    Hi, Thanks for responding.

I solved it in the end- It was a bit of an anomaly. An old G4 tower with ADC and VGA connection, and an older, pre ADC! DVI connecting Apple Studio display, with separate power USB and DVI connections feeding into a thick umbilical cord.

Apple seemed to have gone from VGA to DVi to ADC and back to DVI.

For the power supply I cannibalised an old powerbook supply that was out of use and soldered a new 2.5 power supply female jack to the end. That power supply would have almost cost as much to buy as a proper monitor supply, but I had it and it wasn't in use so It was worth a try. Thankfully it got power supply to the monitor.

Then I found a cheap VGA to DVI, which didn't work because it's a digital signal, and Finally I tried a converter from ADC to DVI (for Formac displays) and it worked straight away, with all features intact. Turn on the monitor and the G4 starts up and everything...

Hope that's useful to someone else. May be a rare problem...

If your display only has 1 cable coming out of it, It may be an ADC display. Apple made their own digital standard shortly before DVI came out. This one cable carries digital video, power and USB.

Sadly, an ADC to DVI converter runs about $90.

Anytime I purchase second hand devices, especially Apple, I go on Ebay.com. It sounds like you're in the UK so you may want to search on Ebay.uk to keep shipping costs down. Just type in your model. I purchase quite a few Apple products and the particular power supply you're searching for should be under 15 pounds UK.

Try to shine aflashlight on the screen and seeif you see an image. I have a Apple cinema HD 30 (A1083). I have no power. I checked the
power supply and it is good. I bought a main board from ebay. I still had the
same problem so I returned it (minus a 15% restocking fee). I read somewhere
that you have to have the usb cables plugged into the computer for it to work.
Is this true? If so I may have returned the part I needed to make this monitor
work. (just my luck) I bought this monitor for $25 used off craigslist. I am
really excited to get this working. I have heard great things about how
fantastic the dispay is. I am ready to do some gaming on it. I am an electronic
technician but not so familar with this apple monitor. I figured I would turn
to this forum to learn from some apple experts out there. Any imput would be
wonderful in troubleshooting my problem.

thanks

You can run that monitor from a DVI connection but you would need to get an adapter from DVI to ADC and that supplies power to the monitor. DrBott makes an adapter like this called the DVIator (http://www.dviator.com/) that should work for you if you other CPU has DVI out.

I purchased a 3M 15"

This display uses a capacitive touchscreen. It relies on the conductivity of your finder work. It may be that it has lost sensitivity and only works when there is a path to ground through your body. If this is the case then the touchscreen will need replacing.

I AM TRYING TO CONNECT MY APPLE STUDIO DISPLAY TO MY MACBOOK PRO AND DONT KNOW HOW OR WHAT CONNECTOR I NEED

Your Studio Display uses an ADC connector, which is very much like DVI but also supplies power for the monitor and adds USB pins so that you can use the USB on the monitor. In order to use it with something that has DVI instead of ADC, you need this adapter from Apple; there are a couple places that have it $5-10 cheaper, but you may as well get it from the people who made it, Apple probably has a better return policy than anyone else in a situation like this. You hook this adapter into the wall and into your laptop, and hook the monitor into the adapter. Hope this helps!

Proper Monitor Cable needed and PS Cable!

Hi Maestro_mark,

These cables can be bought at a store where they deal in PC's and any such high end electronics.

No specifications needed. Just tell the dealer the model number of your monitor and ask for the required cables. If he has a manual the he should refer it if he too is doubtful about anything.
That's all.

Check the connector coming from the monitor and see if any pins are crushed or touching. It may be shorting power going to it.
