We were watching tv and it suddenly shut off

We were watching tv the other night and suddenly the tv just shut off. I tried unplugging, waiting and replugging, but it didn't work. I can hear a slight hum coming from the set, but it won't even attempt to come on. Any ideas? Model# 36V430T, Serial# F043C21OM, Chassis# ITC008MYN. Thank you.

Thanks so much for the help. Unplugging and replugging didn't work (It was unplugged for three days), so I think I would like to try to replace the capacitor. I am handy but have never taken a tv apart before. Do I need to remove the entire back housing? What is the best way to do this? And what position should the tv be in to be able to work on it? Thanks again.

I've heard from various sources that it may be a capacitor, or a bad flyback high voltage transformer. I've also heard it's very difficult to find parts. Any thoughts?

Getting a lot of different answers here and on the net. How about one more opinion? Again, the tv just shut off suddenly. No more picture, no sound, no green light on the power button. Just a faint humming sound.

Also... is it a bad idea to just open the thing up and look for something obvious. I'm considering buying a new tv anyway, so I wouldn't be upset if I accidentally destroyed this one. My only concern is that I read somewhere that you can get electrocuted even though the tv has been off for quite some time.

I was hoping to hear from somebody who said they have seen this problem a lot. Thanks for the info. Can you tell me if there is any danger in opening up the tv. I read that they can retain high voltage for a long time after it has been unplugged. Also, how do I get inside? Thanks again.

Almost all these sets have the exact same problem. It dead and you hear a slight high pitched noise there are two parts bad: 1.) Location marked on board is TLO35---Horizontal output transistor; part number (it will be cheaper as a generic part--Google the part number) part number is: 230760.(should be about 6 dollars) 2.) Location marked on board is LL05--High voltage transformer with large red wire coming out of top that goes up to the bell of the picture tube. Part number for this is 262342; original part no longer available but several sources including one I use on EBAY will have it and most likely the transistor as well---cost for generic replacement is about 20 dollars. Both parts are soldered into the main circuit board so the transistor should be checked first---if shorted---change both and 97% chance set will return to operation. Let me know if you have questions or need to know where to buy the parts----I have seen and fixed about 40 of these sets made from 2003 through 2006 and all have this problem. SD TECH

The set is fairly easy to open---a series of screws on the back and remote the back cover. Have the set unplugged----the only place you have to be careful about that holds a charge is where the wire from the High voltage transformer clips into a small round hole in the top of the tube (there is a rubber cup around it there-----use a jumper wire and touch it to the gray paint on the glass of the tube (ground) and with a screwdriver attached to the wire--put the driver under the cup until it contacts the clip under the cup.

Good advise is always to not touch anything with both hands---yes the flyback is the same as the high voltage transformer--same part.

On Ebay select advanced search---then to the left search by seller----the one I buy from is: sewsales55 and is a company in Maryland called Suburban Electronics----The transistor will have a generic number printed on the front of it like c or d 5482 etc---if d is 2sd5482 etc.

That seller should have both parts in generic--I have bought from him before and everything comes with a 6 month warranty and shipping is very little (usually 5 dollars).

Based on your message, your TV has a bad high voltage section. Probably the HOT (Horizontal Output Transistor) failed or shorted and it either killed the high voltage or there's a current fluctuation; that is why the picture went, but sound remained and/or humming. Then, when you turned it off or unplugged it the protection circuit remained active.

Once the high voltage fluctuates, that's the time the TV would create a buzzing sound.

There's a 75% probability it will require a high voltage and horizontal deflection amplifier overhaul. The normal cost of that should be less than $200 if you take it in.

For this problem, I would suggest to contact a repair tech and have him take care of the problem.

Good luck and have a good day!

Hi,

Before you Proceed, Disconnect the Power Supply, Unplug the Cord and then try to plug in after few minutes, say 30 minutes. If the Problem persists, more likely it's a Faulty Power Supply Board.

You need to have some electronic Experience to Open the TV and then you need to locate the Board. Once you find the Board, you need to pull the wires and try to Look for Swelled / Bulged / Leaked Capacitor. You need to go to Radio Shack or Order Online and then replace that. Once replaced, that would fix the issue. Usually, Bad Caps do have Ammonia kind of odor.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

check all wires are firmly in place, especially the scart lead, and just give them a little push to make sure, if that doesnt work, try unplugging your tv from the mains and wait 5 mins, plug it back in, wait another 5 mins, and turn on, if that doesnt work, contact the company's customer service line.

Motorola DCT6412 Cable box

Ive seen this before...that may be indicative of an upgrade of the software in the cable box that comes from your cable provider. The best thing to do is plug it back in, let it get the "yellow ring" for a bit, and wait for the upgrade (it make take 10 - 15 minutes). Then things should return to normal... If the condition persists, try to call the cable company.

Status light just flashes red and will not turn on

Firstly, unplug your tv for at least 4 hours. Over night is better. This is what we call a Hard or Master Reset.
This should solve your problem. If by chance it doesn't, then more than likely your power supply board is shot.

For the first one, please list the model number and count the blinks. Also, can you please post each problem separately. It will get too confusing trying to address 3 sets with different but similar problems.

Tv turns off after 15 minutes of use

For bobby11 and luis, it is the power supply. Part Number EAY34797001 in the 42" and EAY34796801 in the 32". This is a known problem, and somebody should start a Class Action against LG over this one. Part is available online and easy to swap out for anyone with the most basic knowledge.
