My camera turns on in playback mode but shuts down in any other mode.
Have tried pushing reset and have fresh batteries installed.
Is my camera dead?

Hello, I have the same problem, settings ok, play back ok, but after lens
opens power of the camera go's down.
Some times, if I switch off the display at play back, I can turn it on.
(less then 2 times after circa 30 try).
How can I update the cameras firmware?

I have had mine for two years now, and it just started doing the same thing. The batteries are not dead, because it will turn on in review/playback mode, but as soon as you switch to picture-taking mode, it shuts off. I really loved this camera, took excellent care of it, but this is the second Sony I have had and each has only lasted two years before developing a serious problem. I'm seriously considering switching brands.

my cam worked well for over three years. today i attached the cam (with full memory card) to pc and watched some pictures (from the cam, not after uploading them) on the pc. i also rotated the pictures and when going to 'next' the pc 'saved' automatically. afterwards i 'safely removed hardware', plugged out the usb cable and i noticed a blue screen on my cam, saying 'file error'. i shut the cam down, and turned it on again. it said 'file error' again and then shut down again. now, every time i try to switch the cam on, she shuts down immediately, the green 'power' led just lights up for a short moment....

Sanurulz, thank you for your help, but it is ok already.
the next day, the cam suddenly stayed 'on' when i put it on, and i was able to remove all photos with a file error. i guess the pc tried to save the rotated pictures, but that did not work...

Why does camera shut down?

Your batteries are no good! Digital cameras need a good amount of current to operate and when they are not fed properly they will just shut down!

Camera won't trun on or charge.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if the power will not turn on.

Ensure you are using fresh or fully charged batteries. Check if the battery using is NPBG1 (supplied)
  1. IMPORTANT: Batteries discharge more quickly when used in cold weather conditions.
  2. Attempt to turn on the camera.
  3. If the issue is not resolved, try replacing or recharging the batteries if available.
  4. Attempt to turn on the camera in Playback/Edit mode by moving the mode switch to the Playback/Edit mode or by pressing the playback button.
  5. Switch the unit to camera mode and attempt to turn on the camera.
  6. If the issue is not resolved, try connecting the AC power adapter to the camera and a working electrical outlet. (Skip this step if the camera being used does not support the use of an A/C adaptor.)
  7. Attempt to turn on the camera.
  8. Try power resetting the Camera. (Remove the batteries from the Camera and then press and hold the POWER BUTTON of the Camera for 15 seconds and then reinsert the battery after 1 minute and check if the Camera works normally.)
The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required. If you're located in the U.S, online repair request can be created for getting the unit serviced at the Factory service center by clicking the link below: https://eservice.sony.com or else by selecting your country from Sony Global webpage.

My fuji A700 shuts off when trying to take a picture! It will not hold any charge

Certain A700 has a "known error" which displays low
batteri warning when using playback mode.
The camera shuts off even if batteries are fresh.
A firmware update will fix that. This is however not a do-it-yourselves update, but needs to be done in the service center. It's FOC in most regions, but you should contact you local distributor to check this.

Zoom

Hey bello205,
This camera does not allow the user to actually turn off the optical zoom, but does allow the user to shut off the digital zoom. If you are talking about the digital zoom make sure it is turned on in through the menu system. As far as the optical zoom goes make sure you are not in playback mode. If this doesn't work you can try having the camera reset to the original settings every time you shut off the camera by choosing this option under the setup menu in playback mode. If none of this works have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician.

Sincerely,
Allan

I got this from the Sony website. I haven't tried it yet. I also have an email in to them.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if the power will not turn on.
IMPORTANT: If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
  1. Ensure you are using fresh or fully charged batteries. IMPORTANT: Batteries discharge more quickly when used in cold weather conditions.
  2. Attempt to turn on the camera.
  3. If the issue is not resolved, try replacing or recharging the batteries.
  4. On the camera, move the mode switch to the Playback/Edit mode and attempt to turn on the camera.
  5. If the issue is not resolved, try connecting the AC power adapter (if applicable) to the camera and a working electrical outlet.
  6. Attempt to turn on the camera.
NOTES:
  • Not all cameras are provided with an AC power adapter.
  • If the issue is still not resolved or the camera operates in one mode but not the other, then service will be required.

After 2 years, erratic behavior.

Lens unit problem. Either imact or sand etc in the lens zooming gearbox area. Maybe uneconomical to repair on this model if new lens unit has to be installed. ( it is shutting off because the lens does not come on line properly and so the shutter and CCD do not come on line... when this happens camera switches off. )

Camera freezes in any picture taking mode

Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. you need professional service to fix it.
