Marantz CD-5000 CD player

My Marantz CD-5000 worked satisfactorily for some seven years. Now it will play 2 or 3 tracks, then gradually grind to a halt. I have tried running a lens cleaning disk but it didn't want to run and didn't make any difference when it did.

Hi,

If I may add to XX's post and with his indulgence...

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track. Please refer to the image below.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi,
i,d suggest that if it only plays the first 2 or 3 tracks, then the laser mechanism isn,t travelling to the outer edge of the disk.
this can sometimes be remeded by applying a small amount of vaseline ( petroleum jelly ) to the spindle(s).
also check that the ribbon cable isn,t snagged, which will not allow the laser head to move completely from the inner, to the outer edge of the disk.

See if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
Does the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

Totally silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

You could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust accumulating, but its still worth the try.

If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

If still ur problem is not solved then i am sad to say you have to get it repaired and thats the only solution..

Good luck..

If it does all that stuff then, you need to take it back or exchange it. If you like the company just exchange it, if not buy from some other company.

laser cleaning cd's very rarely work. the only thing they are good for is if there is a build-up of dust on the lens. Sounds like you most likely need to have the laser replaced.

My one-year old Marantz CD5001 CD player

these models use the 12.1 philips laser mechanism and it is a very common problem for failing to read discs.
various technics / marantz / philips / cyrus cd players etc also use it and are plagued with the same fault.
it's a 90% chance the laser is dead!
philips realised the unreliability of this laser and uprated it to the identical looking VAM-12.
do not dismiss the spindle motor as these also fail quite alot on this mechanism.

hope this helps.

Marantz cr2020 cd player

I have had this problem twice now in ten years, each time took it to get repaired at a marantz dealer and they replaced the laser. First time was about $150, second time they didn't charge me. No problems otherwise - which for an integrated item like this, where so many things can go wrong, is pretty good.

Swop the older philips mechanism ( cdm12.1?) that can't handle cdr/w's for the newest compatible equivalent (VAM1201) that plays anything Should be a straight drop-in swop and cost about $40 for the laser unit if you do it yourself. You'll also get a new disc spindlemotor in the assembly. Confirm part numbers first.
