Auto washing machine drum vibrates makes loud noise

When machine is empty use fingers to try and move drum side to side. Is there excessive movement? 2 to 3 mm is ok. If drum moves to much it will be the drum bearings. Easy fix for an engineer or competent diyer. Millions of how to videos on utube.

Noisy drum bearing also play on drum

It's very difficult to advise on a noisy washing machine because you can't describe noises accurately enough. People often describe the same noises quite differently.

Generally though, if a washing machine is rumbling, and noisy on spin, the main suspect is the drum bearings. Drum bearing failure is common on washing machines due to water getting into them if the drum bearing seal fails. To check for drum bearing failure you can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand. If the drum rumbles when spun then the bearings have probably gone.

Another drum bearing failure symptom is excessive up and down play in the drum which can be checked for by lifting the drum up and down from the drum lip behind the door seal. A further symptom of drum bearing failure is a brown rust patch underneath the washing machine and down the back of the outer drum, underneath the drum pulley (where the belt goes) There are usually two small holes at the back of the drum bearings where water that has got past the drum bearing seal trickles out, and it's usually stained with grease and rust.

Other causes of a noisy washing machine are coins and other obstructions inside the water pump. This will cause noise when the washing machine is emptying the water. Coins or other obstructions can get trapped between the outer tub and the inner drum. This would produce a lot of noise on spin as they coins get tossed around inside. Usually, spinning the drum by hand will not reproduce the noise in the case of coins as the coins drop to the bottom of the tub when the washing machine isn't spinning.

A light scraping noise when the drum is turned by hand is usually a bra wire trapped between the tub and drum.

A high pitched squealing or harsh noise can be motor bearing wear. This can also be checked for by taking the belt off and running the motor alone.

A knocking noise can be a loose tub weight. This would be worse with heavy loads and would not be present on spin with no washing in. This is because the knocking noise is caused when the tub (or outer drum) shakes about on spin. Without washing inside the drum the tub doesn't move. Another symptom of a loose tub weight is grey concrete dust under the washing machine.

It's very tempting to ignore noises while the washing machine is still otherwise working. Some noises can be ignored as they will not develop into serious faults. Other noises, if left, will cause extensive damage and can end up costing considerably more than if tackled early or these days writing the washing machine off. Of course the problem is that you can't tell which of the categories a noise falls into - so ignore them at your own risk.

Washing machine sounds like a jet plane, when spinning

I would suspect that the main drum bearings have failed.
From the front of the washer, spin the drum by hand, and if it feels rough or is noisy, then the bearings have failed.
There should be little or no noise when you spin the drum.

I think my drum is out of balance. appears to be sitting down about 1" compared with the door opening. and when it goes into the final spin cycle... what a racket! any thoughts on fixing this? ...

IF (note that's IF) the mis-alignment was significantly less than an inch, perhaps just a tenth of an inch, and this could be "corrected" by lifting the drum ....
... and potentially then move it a further tenth of an inch beyond the aligned point (so that's total play/movement of a fifth of an inch)

AND it HAD NOT developed this fault in just 3 days ....

... then I'd have said that your bearings had failed.
Usually it takes time for the bearings to wear out and become very noisy when spinning (not so bad during washing) and play develop such that you can see it if you try move the drum UP & down by hand.

SO, given the short period of time from being quiet and OK, to being very noisy and REALLY BADLY out of shape I think it's THE SPIDER

The SPIDER is like a VERY FLAT TRIPOD mounted (bolted or riveted) to the back of the drum. At its centre is the SPINDLE that goes through the 2 bearings mounted in the Washer TUB and has the drive pulley attached to the end.

These Spiders can be prone to corrosion and ultimately will fracture such that the Drum is no longer "STRAIGHT" or BALANCED and PERFECTLY IN-LINE with the spindle.

Usually these (BEARINGS and SPIDER) can be replaced (professionally) at a cost that is much less than buying a new washing machine.

It is something that a reasonably competent DIYer could do for themselves. That's all I am and I've done it 4 or 5 times in the last 20 years.

Brown marks on clothes. I have put the machine on a boil wash with nothing in it. washed all pars of machine and it is still happing, Please help

Hello,

Does the drum sound noisy when it spins if it does then I would suspect the bearings are badly worn and the grease from the bearing is getting inside the drum.

Hope this helps.

Washer makes thumping noise when spinning and belt jumps off

I suspect that the main drum bearings have failed.
Remove the belt, and from the front spin drum by hand, if it feels rough or is rumbling or noisy, then drum bearings have failed.
Can be expensive!!!!

Washing machine noisy when on a spin

  • If a washing machine is very noisy on spin, the main suspect is the drum bearings. Drum bearing failure is common on many washing machines due to water getting into them if the drum bearing seal fails. (Hotpoint and Zanussi in particular in my experience) To check for drum bearing failure you can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand. If the drum rumbles when spun then the bearings may have gone. There should be a constant rumble all the time the drum is revolving.
  • Another drum bearing failure symptom is excessive up and down play in the drum which can be checked for by lifting the drum up and down from the drum lip behind the door seal. A further symptom of drum bearing failure can be a brown rust patch underneath the washing machine and down the back of the outer drum, underneath the drum pulley (where the belt goes) although this patch is not always present. There are usually two small holes at the back of the drum bearings where water that has got past the drum bearing seal trickles out, and it's usually stained with grease and rust if water has got into the bearings.

Drum makes loud whinning noise when spinning at high rpms.

Remove drive belt.and turn drum by hand, if it feels rough or sounds noisy, then the main drum bearings have failed., also check that the main drum pulley is not loose. If you think it is the bearings, then it is quite an expensive repair.
    Plz rate this solution.Thanks.

    Noisy

    Hi,

This will be either the motor bearings or the main drum bearing.

To find out, you need to take the back off, remove the belt, and spin the drum and motor by hand, and see which one squeeks.

My bet is the drum bearing. Good if it is as it's cheaper than a motor.

Look online for replacement parts HERE

You need to check if it is the right part for your machine, and may be cheaper elswhere.

It is a job for a competent DIY'er or technician. If you are unsure, employ the services of a domestic repair technician.

    Thank you for using Fixya!
