    Please clarify what you believe is wrong with it. If it needs to be partitioned or formatted,.. you can do this at home. If it is a serious hardware problem,.. there may be nothing you can do at home to fix it. Have you run any of the diag software from the manufacturer, on this drive? If so, what was the outcome?

I have an ibook g4 mac and a 160 gb simpletech hard drive. there are two lights showing in the hard drive- red and blue. how do i get the hard drive to register with my computer, and how do i save my music...

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

System no recognising drive sometimes

The disk-drive probably is "dying".
Copy all the files, if you can, to your 'C:' drive or burn the files to DVD-writable disks.
Then, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

This happened because your brother's computer is infected with a virus or otherwise corrupted. Take the drive and both computers to a local tech to further diagnose the problem and that tech can probably recover your files. I think your brother should pay for the repairs - his computer has some malware that may have overwritten your files. This is why you should do two things - first, always have two kinds of backups - copy vital files to a usb memory stick, and second, don't lend anyone any device you plug into your computer - that is how viruses are spread.

MY Apple computer all of a sudden is not recognizing my 160GB Firelite. It has power but when plugged in the icon won't appear on the desktop and I can't access the drive? Was working earlier in the day.

Try going to utilities in the applications folder, in utilities select disk utility and see if the drive shows up, if so select repair disk after selecting the SmartDisk. If not showing select your hard drive and run repair permissions and see if it helps. Failing this you need a 3rd party disk repair solution like DiskWarrior. The information is still there!

I have a hp pavalion dv6000. It is not coming on.

there is a motherboard issue with this model. hp did offer a free repair on the motherboard.If you still have warranty, then you will need to contact hp to get your laptop motherboard repaired. they also offered an extended warranty due to this problem, you will really need to contact them ASAP so that you don't loose out, cause the motherboard replacement cost is around $600USD.
