A balance weight has come off... so it is unbalanced as it spins.. either that or something is unbalancing it.

Washer spins but it makes a bumping noise

Try to rotate the drum when it is not in use, manually and see if you notice the sound as well. If you do the drum is not balanced and you would need a professional technician to diagnose the bearing and pulley system behind the drum for repairs.

When it spins it is all over the place

If this is the top load washer the problem is the drum supports. Insert a 1/2 inch paint scraper between the front panel and the top about one inch from the corner releasing the spring loaded clip holding the front panel. Tilt the front panel forward and remove. Remove the screws holding the clips that hold the top in place. Lift the top and undo the wire harness for the lid switch assembly. Remove the top and locate the four rubber supports at each corner the machine holding the main tub assembly to the corners of the washer cabinet. Replace the supports that are broken and reassemble the washer.

Spin drying cycle allways go's off balance

  1. There are damper pads beneath the main support housing on the of the base of the washer. If the tub does not recenter or if the machine machine vibrates to much, replace the damper pads.
  2. If the tub leans too much to one side, check tub/centering spring. It maybe broken or detached.

When stackable washer is in spin cycle it bangs on side of unit i checked under and all three spring legs are in place and working

Check the Vibration damper rods to be sure that...
1. They are there and mount is solid.
2. If they are broken in 1/2.
3. The plastic knuckle mounts are not missing/broken.
4. There is oil in the shock absorber/spring section of the rods.

Also - there are suspension springs on the bottom of the tub that could be broken and/or missing.

Replace/repair as necessary.

IF THIS IS A BRAND NEW INSTALLATION - be sure you hav removed the basket shipping pins (4) that secure the tub during shipping.

Leaking water after spin

the most common issue i have had with your problem is a spring wears threw the hole made for it .if so drill a new hole next to old you can even bend the end of the spring tab in a pinch.but if its broken you should purchase new spring.to look at your washer innards,[this is for most models some have sound damping material at the bottom]pull your washer away from the wall and tilt back ,then you can see underneath.the spring im speaking of is in the back.left,middle.its running vertical from the tub frame to the washer frame.there are other possibles but that's the most common.if you need more help please feel free to email thew fixya web site God bless, tom

Kenmore door to tub spring has come off

If you are talking about the inner spring that holds the door bellow to the tub, it's going to require two hands to get the spring to go back in the groove. You will need to carefully remove the bellow from the front opening of the door, first. On the 417 models, such as yours, the bellow is usually glued in place aorund the door frame and held in place by a spring to the tub. Use a putty knife to carefully peel the rubber form the washer facing. Once completed, you can glue it back in place with some appliance adhesive. To get the spring back in the groove on the tub facing, you will need to start at the top and have someone hold it on place as you work your way around the the tub. It's a real bear to get back in at times. Let me know if this helps you. Please post back if you have questions.

Kenmore spin cycle thumping noises

I just went through the same issue with my Kenmore front loading washing machine. I assumed (and a Sears repairman also told me) that it is the bearings. After I took the drum assembly out, I saw the rear drum broken and the inner tub hitting the outer tub. I ordered the outer drum assembly and only when I took the inner drum assembly out I realized the the "Spider" attached to the inner drum (and spindle) was broken. Entire drum assembly cost $417 + shipping and it may be cheaper in the long run to buy a new washer. I like the front loaders because they save water and good for the environment, but the US manufacturers have not yet perfected the technology like European manufacturers (or they don't want the machines to last too long just like cars). Anyway, I am looking into welding the spider tomorrow. If not will return the outer tub assembly and buy a top loading washer for $300!
