Question about Altec Lansing Multimedia Computer Speakers
Your correct the magnets in these lansing units they do not hold up even this long due to the quality of the sound coil check into it you will find that I am correct. I know it would cost more to rebuild the speaker then it would cost to buy a new pair. What happens over time the magnet wears down the coil the coils is located in the center of the speaker and expands to black or white special paper board witch creates the noise and expands it so you can hear quality. When this wears then yes the sound degrades and you get a lot less quality out of it.
Recommendations : Rebuilt or replace speakers.

You could at least try other speakers on your computer. Even a pair of very simple speakers could help you verify whether your sound card is the cause of the problem or not.
