My check engine light came on and started blinking. I stopped at a service station that had a mechanic and he said he smelled rotten eggs when he looked at my car. What does this mean?

I have a 99 chevy lumina 3.1 engine it starts up great but it smell of fumes from exhaust pipes after a while it cuts off

The problem you describe is almost certainly a bad/stopped-up catalytic converter. Not fuel line, not trunk seals, not head gasket or anything else. The fuel line answer is just wrong. If your catalytic converter is bad or stopped up, you will also almost certainly need to replace the Oxygen sensor as well.

You didn't say it smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, but that is the most commonly-stated description...it isn't accurate; a bad converter smells like a bad converter. Most people find the odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur. A clogged exhaust system will shut an engine off after a short time due to backpressure and excessive temperature buildup.

Your check engine light should also be on. Read any diagnostic codes the PCM has set. I'm fairly sure your problem is the catalytic converter...

Smells like rotten eggs

it is happen to old engine because the oil that escape from the engine(engine cover near the exhaust) when it is got hot it sends bad smell but after how many minutes if it already dried up because of heat it will gone (like frying using the used cooking oil in pan there is a different smell).

I think my optispark is going out but not for sure. The car will start up but will not allow WOT it will cut out or die then is hard to start back. The service engine light will stay on until it sets for...

That rotten egg smell is unburnt fuel in the exhaust. I am no expert in ignition systems but i have heard that optispark systems aren't very hardy. Try replacing the coils, wires, and plugs. If that doesn't work its time for a new distributor.

My 1993 Chevy Blazer wont start, it turns but it wont turn over and when it stopped it had a rotten egg smell

rotten egg smell is most of the time an O2 sensor.Goto your diagnostic connector and bridge the A and B posts with a paper clip. Turn on your truck to the"run" position.Your service engine soon light will start to blink, first once, pause, then twice. That's a code 12-means your computer is in diagnostic mode and will now give you all trouble codes.Three blinks is three and so forth.Codes are always repeated 3 times and are double digits (12,13,14,ect.).If the service engine soon light stays on and doesn't blink your computer is the problem and will need to be taken to a shop for further diagnosis.

Rotten egg smell??? Thats smell could be either from a bad 02 senser or a totally clogged catalytic converter...not terribly expensive to replace. As far as the engine shaking, and it not going quick out of the stop light, I'd pull my tranny dipstick and smell the fluid and check for a buring smell and or the color. You want it to be a light red color. You may have an internal transmission issue. You said you got "fluild" out of your tailpipe, was it just water, or was did it have a scent to it. You really should have the car checked out, with those symptoms that you listed you could do more damage by still driving it that way.

Engine light

The "rotten-egg" smell is caused indirectly by the catalytic converter. The main cause is a rich mixture condition from the engine. Your SUV is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system. You can scan your computer for fault or error codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components. There is an alternate reason for the rotten egg smell. this also can be caused by a over charged battery. if so, make sure the alternator isn't overcharging the battery cell. it will boil the contents causing the egg smell. I recommend a diagnostic run to make sure what this problem is.

please rate and god bless.

Rotten egg smell after new plugs and wires seems to miss now

did he gap the plugs properly? sulfur smell comes from excess fuel being dumped into the exhaust (catalytic converter). Could be the coil, or improperly gapped plugs. If the wires were out of order, there would be a misfire.

SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT

The sensor will be external and cats don't always smell like rotten eggs when they go. Also check as you will probably have a post converter sensor as well that sends a signal back to the main computer.
