Question about Asko Dishwashers

Dishwasher pump will not turn off. When I turned the dishwasher on it sucked the water from our sink?!! and now the pump is staying on. I just had the plumber here and he managed to get it working but halfway through the cycle it is doing it again!

Hi emissionwhiz, This is a new dishwasher - not even 6 months old. Is this a normal problem with askos? I live in a very remote place so sending it back for repair is an issue. Can that part that you mentioned be ordered and installed by myself or a plumber?

Hi and welcome to Fixya. It sounds as if you have a direct connection to your plumbing vs an air gap Drain installation. The air gap is supposed to prevent a diswasher from doing exactly what your dishwasher is now doing.

If you do have an Air gap in your dishwasher drain it is clogged and there for instead of preventing back flow into your dishwasher it is acting like part of a sealed system. (I would not be happy with the end product of the plumbers visit for sure!)

Here is a typical Air gap installation:

http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/dishwasher/check/airgap.php

Another how to on cleaning the air gap:

It will be located either on the counter top or the back of the sink but not far from the sink. It can be plastic or chrome in appearance.

At the moment I am sticking with a clogged air gap as the prime suspect. They are easy to clean... pull off the upper cover unscrew the plastic inner nut and remove the raised piece... (NOTE the installed position of the raised area because if you put it back wrong it will be like installing a drain plug in the drain line or can cause your dishwasher to **** water from your sink!)
Usually if the air gap is clogged you will see it right away. I have in the past come across a few that it took sacrificing a coat hanger to clear the clog.

The reason your dishwasher is able to **** water from your sink is because the drain system is sealed vs vented. When the motor run for the wash cycle it is running in the reverse direction as when it pumps out / drains on MOST dishwashers.

I am pretty sure if you follow the Air gap cleaning / clearing procedure above you will no longer have problems.

Feel free to respond with further issues or updates here and I will do my best to get your dishwasher performance back to normal. Thanks for using Fixya.

Tjhis problem is cauised by the electronic control board located in the door of the dishwasher, this is an electronic timer and is really the only part thatr can cause this issue, replace the main control circuit board, it is also known as the CCU or central control unit

if it is new dishwasher then it must be under warranty correct? and yes this part fails regardless of age, and unless you have good electrical and mechanical skills the part is best left to an appliance repair person, a plumber would not be my choice for this repair.

Replace dishwasher

Is your DW plumbed into the garbage disposal as many are? Or does it have the drain line running into a pvc opening in the sink drain line? Remove the drain line to see if water gushes out. If no or minimal water leaves your drain line from the DW, then the problem is internal in the DW. Most likely cause is a plugged screen at the inside bottom of your DW, or the pump is blocked. Best way to resolve is to get a wetvac and just suck all the water out of the inside before you remove the DW. Otherwise you will have water splashing out on your floor. If you can see the screen is plugged up after doing so, then pull the screen out and then turn the DW on. If operating normally it will go into the pump out mode first before adding any water. Turn off the water to the DW under the sink first to eliminate any concern about adding additional water into an already filled up DW. Good Luck!

My dishwasher says DE and does not empty the water after the wash cycle ????

Most commonly, this is due to as clogged dishwasher drain hose. If you have had agarbage disposal installed, it can also be due to the dishwasher plug not having been removed from the disposal. This can be done with a screwdriver (just make sure to remove the plastic plug from the disposal). These will most commonly run from underneath your dishwasher to your garbage disposal (or to a drain pipe under sink). Many times they can be unclogged by removing the hose from under the sink and using a wet/dry vacuum (with the filter removed, so it can suck up wet stuff) to auction the end of the hose. If the hose is not clogged, the vacuum will suck the water through the hose and our if the dishwasher. If it is clogged, hopefully, the vacuum will suck pour the clog, and then suck the water from the sink.
Hope this helps

If you hear the drain pump running but water stays in the bottom then you have to check if the kitchen sink drain is clear. More particularly if you have a garbage disposal unit in kitchen sink then make sure it is working and has been cleared before running the dishwasher. In case you do not hear any drain pump or it is rough and not draining then it may need to be replaced. The drain pump is available from this site.

Water will not come into tub to start washing dishes

Paul,If this dishwasher has just been installed or there has been some plumbing work done in the sink cabinet. Please check the shut off valve for the water going to the dishwasher. it is connected to the hot water pipe in side on the sink cabinet. if the shut off valve is already turned all the way to the right it is in the closed position. This would mean the water is off. turn the valve to the left to turn the water on.This is very common after new counter tops are installed. Please also check water line going to the dishwasher to be sure it is not pinched
Hope this helps

Dishwasher not working.... when i close the dishwasher and turn it on i can not hear any water running and there is a pool of water at the bottom that will not drain

Hello, How long has your dishwasher been do this? Have you washed dish's in it? Also, these German made dishwasher run on less than 2 1/2 gallons of water. These German manufactured dishwasher machines run really quite. Because of the German water conservancies laws. They limit the amount of water dishwasher and washing machine can use. Also, there is no storage hot water system in there homes, it on demand hot water. You can't hear the motor running and about the only thing one can hear is maybe the water washing the dishes.

Now, the water at the bottom of the dishwasher, if the drain isn't connected up under is the sink drain and trap area or the garbage disposable in the sink. but some place lower on the drain pipe. You will not have a spiffing effect on the the bottom of the dishwasher, it the same with washing machines. One the discharge pump starts sucking air, it will not drain the dishwasher. The siffen effect works if the water is below the outlet for the drain. Example: Home owner have the new washing running and continue fill with water. Why, because the drain pipe end is below the the bottom of the washing machine tub. It fill up with water and siffen action continues emptying the tube will it still filling. One heck of a water bill.

Yes water does stay in the sump all the time. This is normal.

Try running a cycle with a cup of Vinegar or Baking Soda in the dishwasher.

Also check to make sure that your drain line (under the sink) is higher than the sink drain and not allowing some sink drain seepage back into the dishwasher.

Dishwasher not emptying

either the pump is not working or the discharge hose is clogged, if you have an air gap on the sink take the hose off and hold it down see if the water comes out by tself if so the pump is bad if not the drain is colgged take out the bottom tray you will need a 1/4 inch nut driver take the plastic screen cover plate off clear it of debris, there is a sharp metal blade in there so be careful, after cleaning it out turn on to rinse and see if it drains if not you will need to either replace the dishwasher or the pump, dollar for dollar new dishwasher time

Make sure that the water shutoff is turned on. It is likely under the sink where the hot water line is tapped to feed water to the dishwasher. Do you have hot water at your sink?
