Cool!
Most players and recorders run Linux.
Yours does for sure.
It is hard busted. It is unable to load one or more files from the 'disk' which is really a ROM/EPROM/Flash device.
IF you tried to update or hack the flash, you busted it, otherwise it busted itself. Could be a cold solder joint or a cracked PC board too.
No user serviceable parts inside.
See your dealer or warranty holder.
If you can take it back to the store you bought it from, do that. If it is still under warranty, get it serviced.

DVD tray is locked, how to unlock?

Step 1:
Initialize unit by simultaneously pressing Back Skip, Pause and Open/Close on the front of the unit. "INITIALIZE" should now appear in the
display and will remain in the display for a few seconds.

Step 2
With "INITIALIZE" still in the display, now simultaneously press Back Skip, Stop and Open/Close on the front panel. "ALL SET" should now appear
in the display.

My philips dvd player has stopped playing CD's and DVD's and on the display screen it shows "root". i have had this DVD player for 16months. Can you help me?? cheers

Usually "ROOT" is an indication that the player has read the DVD.

ROOT means that the DVD is in the main menu screen.

Sounds like the DVD player is ok, but you may have a loose connection somewhere.

Check all of your AV connections between the TV and DVD.

Also make sure that the TV is set to the same AV channel as the connection you are using.
E.G. if you have connected the DVD to the AV 1 socket of the TV, make sure that the TV is set to channel AV 1.

Change the Scart setting (in the setup menu) from the default setting (RGB) to the other available setting (CVSC?).

Try scanning for channels. It may well download time and date automatically.

Had the same problem ourselves.

Press set up on remote control.

Press the down button on remote control 5 times then press select.

Press the down button 2 times and press select.

Press select again. After 5 to 10 seconds the machine will switch itself off.

Turn off at the mains and then turn back on again and the dvd goes into preparing mode.

Go to AV channel and go through initial set up as you have just reset to factory conditions.Don't worry about any programmes on the hard drive they will still be there.Worked for us.

Try to reset the settings in the setup to default, try to burn an other DVD, it might work.
