Question about Samsung SpinPoint P80 SP0802N 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

SP0812N HDD 80Gb

I installed a second HDD to my PC as Slave.
It's a SP0812N and should be 80 Gb. The master is a WD 120 Gb. BIOS identifies the model correctly but with 32 Gb only. Is there something in my motherboard that limits the HDD size?

    I found the problem !

This issue isn't an OS issue, the BIOS detected the drive with 32Gb before starting Windows. When I tried to connect the drive to the secondary slot, I read the jumper settings to set it to Master and I noticed there was a jumper option to limit the capacity to 32Gb. I took off that jumper and at the next boot the BIOS detected it with the right size: 80 Gb. Although Windows stole aout 5.5Gb cause it detected only 74.56Gb for partitionning. I wonder why Microsoft steals so much ?

Hi,
this mainly depends on The Operating system, if your using Windows 2000 or above it should,nt be an issue.
sometimes there are limitations on 2 hard-drives sharing the same IDE channel on the mainboard.
Try putting the second hard-drive on the secondary motherboard slot, with it,s own individual cable.
If non of the above works, it,s possibly not formatting correctly.
you,ll need a program that zeros then formats the drive.
Hope this helps.

    Hi,

all hard-drives are,nt true capacity, it,s standard for a drive to format out to 74-76 gig. this is due to the allocation units for blocks/cylinders et,c. the o/s is only probably 700mb plus.

The main thing is, that your up and running.

I bet your glad you took the time to study the jumpers ?

    Regards mike @ Compurepair.

You did not indicate that the 40 Gb hard drive had Windows installed on it and whether it was the original hard disk for this computer.
There is a possibility the 40Gb hard drive is faulty.
Try installing the 40Gb hard drive as a slave drive with the 80Gb drive as the master drive (don't forget to set the jumper on the 40Gb hard drive as Slave. Check the BIOS to see if it detects the 40Gb hard drive, and when the computer boots up, if it can see the 40Gb hard drive and opens the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK.

Need to know how to upgrade a hard drive from a 8 gig to 80 gig

I am typing this on a Dell 4600 RIght now. You need to look up how to set the jumpers on the internal hard disk ( 8GB) to SLAVE MODE, and set the 80GB to Master.
Remove the 8GB from the metal bracket, and put the 80GB in its place. Put the 8GB beside it. Plug the 80GB into the end of the IDE cable, and the 8GB into the middle. When you boot, you can hit F2 to go into the bios, and change the boot order from HD0 to HD1 and you can boot from your 8GB.

Now, If you want to boot from the 80GB, ( which I would ) you need an operating system.

Get your Disk labeled Reinstallation CD, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Including Service Pack 1, and boot from it. Then format the 80GB, and install the OS There.. You will need your WIndows XP Home Key. ( you can either get it off the case or use Magic Jelly Bean Key finder to get it off your 8GB. Get the key and write it down. ITS IMPORTANT ).

Then you can change your boot order in BIOS, back to HD0, and boot from your fresh copy of XP Home.

If your interested in having a close to seamless experence as possible, you might want to invest in a copy of Partition Magic Pro. It can copy both the restore partition, ( the first 600MB of your 8gb disk ) and the primary partition of the 8gb, and resize the 8gbs primary partion on the 80gb to 80gb. ( YEA! ).

If you have *any* *any* lack of understanding please clarify

there are few thing you ahve to keep in mind

there are two type of hard disk
1. IDE
2. SATA

As per your hdd capacity it should of IDE type.

Now there are two IDE slots on motherboard. One is Primary and other is Secondary

You can fix two hdd with one IDE Slot that mean you can fix up upto faour IDE hdd at a time

Now again there are Primary master and Primary Slave

and

Secondary Master and Secondary Slave

Now You have to examine what was the location of previous hdd
1 Primary Master
2 Primary Slave
3 Secondary Master
4 Secondary Slave.

Now you have to make a HDD master or Slave.

just in between data cable connector and power cable connector there is a jumper. that specify the master or slave. do reply me if it works well thanks

160gb - but ensure the bios is up to date and check the motherboard manual as that will or should explain about maximum capacity of hard drives but am sure it should be fine.

If it is not and does not detect all of it you can partition the partitions into smaller amounts ie 80 gb partitions each ?

WD drive won't work as master when Seagate 80GB drive connected as slave.

Hi,

The jumpers on the Seagate must be set to slave.

otherwise they are conflicting for the Active partion and bootloader.
