There are usually at least 3 connectors that are the same size on the back of a typical computer. You've probably just accidently plugged it into the wrong one. One is for line in, one is for a microphone, and one is for the output to the speakers. Try one of the other plugs (if they are color coded, it is usually the one that is light green in color).

HP speakers not working with Dell computer

Your speakers are plugged into the wrong port? Most computers have at least a mic port and a speaker port, many also have front, rear, center, and subwoofer. Try playing a sound, then moving the connector to another port and trying again.

Are your new speakers plugged in? Is the volume on them turned up?

No sound

be sure they are plugged into the right jack on back of sound card. Also, plug speakers into a second different PC with good working sound. This will verify that the spaekers are still ok. If speakers are ok, then check in control panel under Sounds, see if a sound cscheme is selected. If No Scheme selected, select one, then respond NO if prompted to keep scheme.

Speakers won't work

Hi, you may want to try plugging the input line of the Dell speaker to the other jacks. Normally green is for speaker, pink - microphone and blue is for line-in and all are normally at the back of the computer. Sometimes, the back are deactivated if there are jacks in the front., so you may to try plugging it in the front if they are present. Assuming the speakers light/power up, if you want to check if they are working is by touching with your finder the input plug which should produce a humming sound. Also worth to check the drivers of your sound card. Hope this works for you. Regards.
