Tip

DRIVER NEEDED: Hitachi hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4241n (Windows XP Home)

DRIVER NEEDED: Hitachi hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4241n (Windows XP) [IDE]

Simple solution:

Situation
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39. Or the drive simply does not appear in My Computer or Device Manager.

Solution

To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}LowerFilters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}UpperFilters

Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

Note: Some programs are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.

My Samsung CD-R/RW TS-H292A won't open so I tried to flash the new firmware (TS04) using sfdnwin but I got an error now my cd writer is totally not working although device manager still detects it. What...

Well at this point you dont have much options try to flash it again but with a new flash file and do it in pure DOS (Not a Dos Box in Windows) you need to boot the system from a Win Win 98 cd or floppy. and then flash from there.

Not Reading/writing not even detecting

You need to check the bios on start up. You should have your CD/DVD drive as the first boot device.

Windows doesn't recognize new SATA DVD-RW drive. It has a ? in the Device Manager window in XP, but i cannot find the correct .inf file to satisfy it.

you need to do few things
1. reset the bios so that it starts detecting the drive
2. right click on the option with yellow ? and select uninstall and restart your system
3. remove the upper and lower filters from registry
the path for the same is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
try booting through this drive using a bootable cd just to check if its not an issue with the DVD RW
i hope these steps help
please let me know in case it does'nt so that i check for further possibilities

My dvd rw is not detected

When installing SP2 version, you possibly corrupted the drivers for the DVD. It is possible there are different drivers for the DVD between XP and XP (sp2). Go to the laptop mfg website and download the newest drivers for the DVD.
