Muffled voices in video playback

Ever since I updated the firmwear on my Archos 504 to 1.6.2 and purchased the plug-in to play mp4s, I´ve had a problem with sound during video playback. The sound is fine through the Archos built-in speakers or when connected to the TV through the docking station. However when I play video and try to listen to the sound through headphones, the voices are really muffled, although sound effects and background sounds play just fine. Am I missing a codec for these files? It played fine before so I'm mystified.

Changing the equalizer settings does not work.

Go into your soudns settings, look for any settings that are for the Headphones in particular or auxilary or Line-in. Sometimes if these are on or turned down, it can effeect it. I.E. On my system, the Auxilary has nothing plugged in but if i have it turned on, it gets interference from my wireless and causes sound spikes so i muted it. Yours might be turned down or set low.

Also, sometimes MP4 files have a low Bitrate for the audio or its set top Mono or Stero and your earphones may be the oposit of what its set at so it sounds muffled.

If the MP4 has stereo sounds and you have stereo headphones it should be allright, but if it has MONO sound and you have stereo headphones, it might sound weird.

or it could be set to 5.1 surround and your earphones arent outputing all the sounds so it sound weird. Try using a different media player and devices to test it on and see if its the same on everything.

Hi,

Withe the indulgence of Lemmor....

To my knowledge most Archos units share the same circuitry for the audio playback whether they be for lineout, built-in speaker and/or headset. And since they are digital in nature, then it can be presumed that the quality would also be the same all through it whatever medium is used to listen to. Hence a missing codec would effect all and not only headset(s).

Having said that, may it be possible that there is nothing wrong with the Archos unit but rather with the frequency response of the headset themselves. Of course the fastest way to verify this would be to use an alternative headset.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

The frequency response of the headset is subject to change relative to the length of time it has been used, being accidentally dropped/pressed. One should note that being small, they tend to loosed their full effectiveness after some time.

Since "played fine before" and I will assume that you have tried all possible combinations of settings/parameters (and even perhaps a sound reset), then freq response and/or compatibility may be the issue.

Dvd transfer

Download Magic Video Converter from www.isohunt.com and change the video to WMP Standard 8. You don't need 1.25 GB vids for the archos, it's too high a quality for such a small screen.

Placing films onto the 504

I have put plenty of DVDs onto my Archos, but I use the optional cradle which connect to the TV as well as DVD players. You simply connect the DVD player onto it and play your dvd, which switching on the Recorder function on your unit.

Alternatively, can you convert the DVD onto your PC and then transfer onto the Archos in normal fashion, or is this what you are saying you tried to do already?
