Put the dial on the largest # - like normal is 2.2 and basting is 5 on mine.

Is the Kenmore sewing machine 15343 able to do a baste stitch? If so, how?

A baste stitch is basically setting the machine to a straight stitch with the longest stitch length available. Loosen the top tension slightly if you want to remove the basting later.

What are the correct settings for basteing on an elna excellence 730

Here's a manual for your machine:

ELNA eXcellence 730 Instruction Manual

If your machine does not have a "basting" stitch selection, you make your own basting stitch by:

* Setting the stitch length to the maximum
* Loosen the upper tension so the bobbin thread lies flat under the fabric

Then to gather or remove the basting stitch, it is easy to pull on the bobbin thread.

How do I set the machine to do a basting stich

if the machine can do a basting stitch the information should be in the sewing machine manual, if you don't have a manual, add a comment with the name and model number of the machine and someone should be able to help you find one.

or you can also try youtube for a video

How can I do basting stitch for machine embroidery?

Some machines have a built-in basting stitch. If yours doesn't have it, the closest you can get is setting the stitch length to as long as possible. To make the basting stitch easy to remove, loosen the upper tension. Then to remove the thread, just grab the bobbin thread and pull.

Feed dog low.Notpulling.Checked setting for sewing/darning, it was set right. Tried levers, moved the basting stitch nob to L and R and...the needle bar jumped up like 5 inches, into the head.

Difficult to diagnose without the make/model. However, if it has a basting stitch, that could be one problem. Some machines with a basting stitch have a problem with it sticking and preventing the machine from working properly. Also sounds like perhaps the feed dogs are dropped for darning and are not pulling the fabric through the machine--or the stitch length is set too close to zero so the stitches are sewing in one place or on top of each other. Make sure the machine does not have a darning foot installed--the darning foot is shorter than standard feet so there is space between it and the needleplate. Also, some machines have the ability to increase/decrease the presser foot pressure that will affect the way fabric is moved through the machine.

Recommendation is take it for service.

How to baste?

Basting is simply using a long stitch that can be pulled out after you put the main stitch in. It holds fabric in the right place till it is sewn.

I am wanting to set my machine (quilters dream 6603) for the best basting stitch I can. I am having trouble figuring out how to set the machine. Thanks.

I haven't been able to find a 6003 manual or a good image of the stitch range for this machine on line. However, a basting stitch might look like " . _____ . _____. " on your stitch selector. As your machine is targeted for quilters I'd have expected it to have a basting stitch in its range.

If there is nothing like that, then just dial up the longest possible straight stitch, ie take length up to 4 or 5, whatever the maximum number is. Then loosen off the top and bottom tensions and stitch away.

If you are using this to baste a quilt top, botton and batting together, I've discovered a product called "spray basting" which is fantastic and "glues" the layers together while you sew them. You need a big clear floorspace though and put paper down under the project. But it works great.

Trust this is of help to you.
