Question about Toshiba P000171240 Keyboard

Spilled Coffee on HP Laptop--miraculously it works with errors

I tried doing a System Restore to about 10 days ago and it went wild. The cursor was blinking at the top left-hand side of the screen and it was making a loud beeping sound. The restore did not complete.

I don't give up easily so I attempted to boot up...again the screen goes black as the cursor blinks at the top left-hand corner of the screen...and it makes a loud beeping sound. I have to hit one of the "F" keys to get it started.

I have also lost use of a couple of letters on the left-hand side of the keyboard.

Other than that, it appears my files are in tact as our the programs. Can this be remedied? If so, how??

.

Can this be remedied?

Sorry, 1st time I have used this site. Thanks for your comments...as I said the last letter in the alphabet is listed repeatedly in the "Start Search" drop down area. So, it is working upon startup but must be sticking?

  • asomalley2 Feb 08, 2010

OK---I'll try taking the letter off. One good thing, I drink my coffee black so at least there isn't any sugar--so no sticky keys.

It depends on how damaged the keyboard is. Electronics get very touchy about such things. If you let it dry it may work, but there may be some circuitry damage. You may need to seek professional repair if the board doesn't start working. Also, you could get a new keyboard for it and install it yourself. Until you do this go get a desktop keyboard and that should get you by. Keep an eye out for other problems, the coffee may have gone deeper into the laptop and may have gotten onto the motherboard. Your files should not be in danger anymore, because it is somewhat hard for liquid to get into a hard drive (unless it causes a surge).

The circuit for that particular key is probably shorted. Or the button is just stuck. See if you can pull that key up off the keyboard and manually push the button down. I know this works for desktop keyboards. However, b/c of the coffee I think the circuit has an issue. Hopefully it is not damaged. If it is you will have to repair the circuit board. This is one of those things that you really shouldn't try yourself unless you have experience with circuit boards.

If you don't normally enter a password, reboot in safe mode and choose a time before it went wrong with Restore Point. Then use an anti virus program to clean up your system.

DO A POWER DRAIN OF THE LAPTOP BY DISCONNECTING THE POWER CHORD REMOVING THE BATTERY AND PRESSING AND HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON OF THE LAPTOP FOR 20 SECS

ALSO IF WE CAN REACH THE DESKTOP MAKE IT SURE WE CLEAN THE COMPUTER OF UNNECESSARY FILES BY TYPING THIS COMMAND IN THE RUN BOX
1.START BUTTON> RUN>TYPE IN %temp% >and then hit enter and select all the folders in this windows and delete it
2.START BUTTON>RUN> TYPE IN prefetch and then hit enter and select all the folders in this windows and delete it
3.start button>run box type in cleanmgr.exe and select the drive usually operating c and try cleaning the files
WE ALSO HAVE TO THE BIOS UPDATE OF THE LAPTOP FROM THE MANUFACTURER WEBSITE if needed
If this does not help then take your laptop to the day when the laptop was working fine by doing a system restore
system restore can restore within a period of 90 days
if then this will be the path to system restore
    start>all programs>accesories>system tools>system restore
if not then get the recovery or the restore disc from the manufacturer and take the computer to factory condition.
    have a nice day!!!

    Got tea on my laptop

As i understand, the system seems to be working fine after the spillage ... there shouldnt be any issues other than the keyboard being sticky .
If the tea had seeped in then it could have fried the Motherboard. However , you could reach HP for support incase of any issues , if you tell them that the tea was spilled on the system then they might not cover the issue under warranty.

The cursor is mvoving here and there very wildly

The most common reason is Malware or Spyware. If you are able, download and run Malwarebytes and Spybot. If not, boot to Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly) and run the software from there. If still not successful, access System Restore and restore your system to an earlier time, before the problems began. Hope that helps.
