SOURCE: verbatim 160 GB portable hard drive doesnt want to open IbookG4

first of all, if you don't have any info there, you should format it, always that helps a lot, but if you have some info and you don't want to format it, well, check it on a pc, if it opens, that means that the hd is fine and the problem is the connection, like renx said, check if you can plug it with firewire, or usb, for mac is recomended the firewire, and its faster, but if you have only usb, it should work fine, so check if you can see it on the desktop, and if not check the finder, maybe it has another name or change its position

SOURCE: My Verbatim suddenly stopped working on my Mac OS

It sounds like your hard drive is damaged. Hard drives are very, very dilicate pieces of machinary. The disk is paper thin and any sudden jarring, especially dropping it creates a warp in the drive. It could also be just a mechanical failure. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:

You have to partition your Verbatim Drive to work on a Mac. Go to Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. When in Disk Utility select the 232.9 GB SAMSUNG HM250HI Media to the left.

Go into Device Manager and if it doesn't appear there click "scan for hardware changes". If that doesn't work, makes sure you have plug and play enabled. Always use the safely remove hardware option when unplugging it.

It want come up on my computer

Step 1:
Problems with Verbatim portable hard drives vary depending on your model of hard drive, your operating system and your computer hardware. Some problems can include insufficient USB power output, the file system format, and potential overheating due to enclosure materials.

File System b> Verbatim portable hard drives come formatted for use with Mac computers. If you're using it with a Windows or Linux computer, you will need to format it to a file system that your operating system will recognize; Windows computers typically work with NTFS, while modern Linux distributions use ext4. If you have computers with mutliple operating systems, FAT32 is usually considered easier for all operating systems to recognize. Verbatim does not recommend switching a portable drive between PC and Mac computers once you've formatted the drive one way or the other. Adequate Power While most computers supply adequate power with one USB port, older computers can have insufficient power output. If your computer doesn't seem to be powering the drive, use of a Y-shaped USB cable, designed to be plugged into two USB ports, can get more power to run the drive. Additionally, consider trying different USB ports on the same computer; some USB ports get more power than others. Drivers b> Make sure that you have any relevant drivers related to the hard drive that you have purchased. If your drive didn't come with a setup disc, you can check the Verbatim website for product drivers. Overheating b> Of Verbatim's seven portable hard drives, four are enclosed in plastic; of the other three, one is enclosed in aluminum, one in leather, and one in rubber. While all the drives are tested to run well with their enclosure, metal enclosures conduct heat away from the hard drive and help to prevent overheating. Plastic, on the other hand, is an insulator, so plastic enclosures may contribute to heat buildup. Check plastic-enclosed drives for overheating and avoid leaving them plugged in when not in use.

Windows 7Might not be formatted correctly. Check Disc Management under Administrative tools. This will give the true size including space that has not assigned as a partition.

What do I do to get started with my new 97060 500 gb Clon portable hard drive?

Plug it into the computer via the USB cable that should provided in the box. There should be instructions in the box telling you this however.

The bigger end is the USB and I presume the smaller end is probably a mini USB connection: Like This

I can't get the Verbatim Clon to work on my Mac. I don't really know what I'm doing wrong. The user guide says I need to set up the Nero BACKITUP software and that I do this by double clicking on the...

The Nero Backitup Software is not currently supported on Mac OS X.The setupx file you were trying to use was probably a .exe file which is windows only, .dmg is for Mac OS X. If you can view the drive when plugged into your computer than you can use it to manually backup, or you could find a backup software that is mac compatible. Seeing also that the drive came with a .exe, it might not be formatted properly, which could explain if it doesn't show up at all on your desktop or in Finder. To use the drive effectively you would need to reformat the drive to a Mac compatible format then simply use whatever backup software you find to fully take advantage of this advice.

Or you could return it and find a drive that is currently supported by OS X.

How to use verbatim model # usb500

Plug it in one of the usb ports of your computer. Check if the external hard drive has a power button.
Normally, something will pop up on the screen asking you to install the software that came with it.

Follow the instructions and you may now use the external drive as your back up drive.

External hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps
