I have the same problem with my windows 2000 cd But I found out that you can only boot from a windows cd if you have already another windows installed on your system; I had to install windows 98 first and than i could boot from that cd by selecting 'fresh instal' in 98 I hope this info helps a bit.

Your optical drive might be dirty or bad. Try an official Dell disk to see if it will read it, especially a Dell drivers and Utilities disk. Also try a boot flash drive or boot floppy(since your system is a older) to get the system up. If your system comes up any of those ways, I would try a disk cleaner. If that doesn't help, then you probably have a bad cd drive. You could also look in bios setup to make sure the bios is showing your cd drive. It should list it there somewhere. Probably on the first page.

How to forat the hard drive

Good day sir, hi, lets review first some of the reasons why windows xp cannot be installed on your PC, here are the possibilities :
  1. Your Windows XP CD is scratched beyoned readable. You will get prompts for missing files or files that can't be read on the CD. Get a good copy of windows XP.
  2. A memory module (ram) or some are defective, you get the blue screen with all sorts of warnings and data you can't understand and numbers you don't know. Check your ram modules. To be sure have it tested on another PC. If bad, replace it.
  3. Your memory should be aleast 128 mb or more for windows XP to install properly.
  4. Your CD/DVD drive is bad or selective of the CDs it reads, you may need to check the drive.
  5. your hard drive is bad, or has to much bad sectors near the boot area, where windows install its system and boot files, you have no choice but to replace it with a new one, or else you cannot format the old one no matter how.
Thats it, if I miss something, let me know, send me error messages to diagnose it properly.

Want to install xp without no cd drive or floppy drive help plz

Sure can.
Go to the BIOS menu, and select Boot from USB, or something close to it. (different companies use different terminology.)
Once that is done, use a USB CD/DVD rom and use the installation cd.

How do i restore my dell settigns back to factory settings

If you mean BIOS setting, then enter the BIOS, choose Restore Defaults.
If you mean your windows installation, use the Operating System reinstallation CD from DELL (the green CD, for Windows XP). After operating system installed, use your driver CD (usually the blue CD from DELL). If you don't have the CD, please contact Dell support center to get the CD (charges may apply).
