There are probably two supplies in your set; a main power supply and a second one that supplies the high voltage needed by the plasma display. You may have replaced one that was not faulty. It still wouldn't be wasted money if this is true since both supplies are probably of the 'switched mode' type and these can be very reliable if quality components are used which isn't the case in too many.

Have you inspected or changed the lamp? Lamps can slowly break down and not function. Sometimes they will show obvious signs of internal breakage and other times are cloudy or a the base of the center glass filament there will be a bubbling of the glass there. Another problem is there could be an excess of dust accumulated and need to be cleaned out with a vacuum. At any rate, I would recommend changing the lamp first if you haven't done so. There is a access door to the lamp. Some are on the back and some on the front. If the lamp is good the next part is the power supply which will have some bulged capacitors on it keeping the set from starting up normally. If you know how to solder the capacitors are easily identified by a bulge on the top of them. If you cannot solder then changing the power supply is a hand which can be done by unplugging and plugging up another. Do a search online with the model number or call at 1-800-638-3328 for price and availability giving them the model number and mentioning the power supply

Toshiba 27af45 repeatedly turns itself off. Sometimes (usually) every few minutes, other times will stay on for hours. Works perfectly otherwise.

The fact that the television stays on for hours and other times turns in five minutes shows that your problem is intermitent .A defective component in the power supply is probaly causing the B plus voltage to go up.The TV can also have a dry joint which looks more likley i am curtain if you gave the TV a firm tap to the side when it come off it would come on back. Try it .

There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.
