If the pilot is going out as soon as you release the gas knob, you have a bad thermocouple. It is the safety probe copper colored that is screwed into the gas valve and the other end is in the pilot flame. It is a little tricky but you can get it out and replace it with a universal thermocouple sold at good hardware or farm center stores.

Make sure the gas valve is on. The thermocouple may need to be cleaned in order for the pilot to stay lit.

Hi,
First thing is to replace the thermoscouple. When you light it you get it a bit hotter then normal. You turn on the main burner which keeps it hot. Then when it goes back to just pilot the flame is not hot enough to hold the pilot valve in.
Replace the thermocouple and you will be fine...

Heater wont light

the problem is the thermocoupler. it is the other small tube next to the pilot light. this tube sends a signal to the main valve to let the fuel go through. sometimes you have to change the whole pilot unit.

Pilot wont light.

Firstly make sure the gas knob is exactly in the pilot mode some are finiky and won't light unless in exactly the right postion. Make sure once lit when pushing down on the pilot knob that you hold it down long enough for the thermocouple to sense the pilot. Barring both of those the most likley culprit is the thermocouple itself is faulty and can easily be removed usally with a couple of screws and a small adjustable wrench.
